I have an old 3 prong with a split washer that does not seem to be timed with any reason.  Wondering if having a slot open on the top would cut muzzle rise?

No.

I wanted to take the shims out on my AR and still have the FH timed correctly, I ended up chucking the FH on the lathe and taking a bit off of the back until when it was torqued it lined up perfectly.

You could always take that route if it bothers you.

It probably won't help muzzle rise at all. But if you want it timed to a specific rotation, try a peel or crush washer. I prefer peel.
