Tell me about the Colt LMG upper. Is it something I may enjoy Beta dumps with or does it really do much more than a heavy barreled upper would? What are they going for these days? Also I already have the hydraulic buffer that goes with the LMG upper, educate me on that also. Do you use a regular rifle spring with the hydraulic buffer? Thanks! |
The LMG was designed as an open-bolt firearm using the milspec M16 receiver. As David says, you can't fully utilize the upper without doing the complete open-bolt conversion. As a closed-bolt M16 upper, the LMG has a slightly heavier barrel, a thicker gas tube, the love-'em-or-hate-'em handguards, foregrip and bipod. If you can live without the handguards, you can build the rest on a chrome-lined HBAR upper for a lot less money. The thicker gas tube is nice, but remember, the gas tube was designed by Stoner to act as a fuse that prevents damage from overheating -- in a closed-bolt M16 system, you are just increasing the risk of damage. (The heavy LMG gas tubes also are no longer available at any price, so if you burn out yours, you're out of luck.) The LMG uses a rifle-length Colt hydraulic buffer with a green spring -- I don't know the spring rate, but it is not the same as the regular rifle spring. I've only seen them used together, so I have no idea how effective it would be without the specific green spring. |

I've been using the LMG buffer for years with a regular spring (since I'm too cheap to lay out ridiculous money for a "green one"). It lowers the cyclic rate to about the same level as an AAC Super Slow rate reducer, so It's nice if you like a slow cyclic rate. It works perfectly in 5.56, 7.62x39, 9mm, and .300 Whisper (so far). |

I love mine. This is my second (first one was stolen) and is of the later design that the USMC evaluated to replace the M249. I only run mine with the complete openbolt FCG. The barrels are Deimco and are super accurate. I know one guy that uses his for a praire dog gun (closed bolt). Here's a few pics of mine (click on pic for larger version) and a link to a video of it shooting. Click here to watch May-Machine-gun-shoot |

Thanks! |
I have only seen 2 and I own 1 of them. The other is for sale on Autoweapons as a complete gun. As for the FCG, I got mine from Dennis Todd but he said that was his last set. They do come up on the Ad boards occasionally but you need the green recoil spring and hydraulic buffer if you want to use the open bolt trigger group. Also they will only work in a RR, they will not work with a RDIAS. |
I heard they (OB FCG) beat up the hammer pin whole? Is that true? |
This is speculation by people who have never owned or shot them. I have 2 and have monitored the FCG pin holes and I never saw an increase in their size or any more wear than my other M16. I have had over 30 thousand rounds through my OBLMG guns. You must of course use the right green spring and hydraulic recoil buffer. |
