I'm in the market for a subgun and ran across an UZI that's in state.  I need to know what to look for from you guys that know these things.  I've done some research on uzitalk but it's a bit confusing to me.

Here's what I know so far:  It's an IMI model B semi auto conversion done by Fleming.  It's a registered receiver.

So....what should I look for?  Questions to ask?  Since it's a registered receiver, I can do caliber conversions correct?

Even though it's a "registered receiver", you need to make sure it was done correctly......meaning....at a minimum, the blocking bar was removed. Some conversions left the bar in place, essentially "marrying" a slotted bolt to the gun.

You can't legally "slot" a caliber-conversion bolt to fit a receiver with a blocking bar.... unless you are an SOT, and register the slotted bolt as a post 86 MG......

If the blocking bar was not removed as part of the original conversion, it cannot be done legally now......and full auto caliber conversions are not an option....

Basically you want the gun to accept as many unmodified SMG components as possible......meaning blocking bar removed, trunion opened up to accept unmodified SMG bbls, and feed ramp restrictor ring removed .

It is legal to have the trunion opened up, and SMG spec feed ramps installed however.

If you have any photos of the gun, and the slot in the side  bolt is visible, chances are 99% its a "bastard" conversion you want to stay away from......

here is a RR Uzi with the blocking bar intact.....uses a "married" slotted bolt........avoid something like this :

here is a RR Uzi with the bar removed......uses unmodified SMG bolts......this is a good one (even though this still has a restrictor ring and uses modified SMG barrels, it can be easily, and legally, brought up to full SMG specs):
