say you had a RR valmet in 223 could you send it to a smith and have it rebuilt in 7.62x39 and to take ak mags? if this is possible who would be recommended to do the work?

obviously wouldn't be worth it on a semi but an RR seems like it would be a tempting option.

I did think of 5.45 when I asked the question.... But for some reason I also come back to 7.62 for an ak.

I have to ask why?

223 is plenty cheap right now

and valmet 7.62x39 magazines are expensive and stupid hard to find.

i know they do make an adapter for 223 for the valmet.

i would keep it in 223 if it was me. but i would add the bicycle styled forearm it was me

From what I've seen, brass 5.56 goes for at least 30 cents a round, while good 7.62x39 can be had for less than 25 cents a round. It adds up at 600 rpm. Plus the 7.62 just tears stuff up better.

Valmet 7.62x39 magazines ARE AK magazines.  They are very inexpensive, including 75 round drums.  The Valmet 5.56 magazines are incredibly rare and expensive.

i know they do make an adapter for 223 for the valmet.

The Valmet 5.56 magazines feed from an angle, which almost precludes safely using magazines from other weapons, which feed straight-in.  There are those who have modified other magazines for use in 5.56 Valmets, with varying degrees of success.

I like the bicycle pistol grip and cheese-grater fore end on a Valmet.  A milled receiver 7.62x39mm Valmet with either a fixed or folding steel strut butt stock would be badass.

If it was a 76 I could see it. Lots of work possibly.
A 71 would be

Added benefit one might be able to use a Ciener .22 kit.... No ?
