Okay, so lets say someone bought what they thought was a used 10.5" AR upper.  It was marked 10.5" and the dealer said it was 10.5".  Lets say that same person filed his Form 1 as a 10.5" barrel, trusting the barrel was 10.5".  Then later that person was considering different handguards and when he began measuring things he found his barrel is actually 11".

After taking the Noveske FH off and dropping a cleaning rod down the barrel onto the closed bolt is this the true and correct way of measuring a barrel?

How would this effect the Form 1?  Is it okay cause it is not shorter than 10.5".  Should the guy change his form 1?  Does it cost to change the form? Lets say the Form 1 is in pending status right now.

Before the guy gets beat to hell over the fact he should have measured for himself, he already gets that and has beat himself to hell.  As far as returning it the guy got it used at a gunshow and don't even know if he'll be able to find the same dealer, again.

You guys got any input for this hypothetical situation?

As long as it isn't shorter, hypothetical person should be fine, from my understanding.

Still should be ok.  After its approved, said person can send a letter to BATFE, updating the info to make him feel a little better abt it.  No charge for the update.

I wouldn't bother them with any notification. Jeez, they don't give a hoot about 1/2 an inch when it's NFA either way. They have their hands full with transfers, so don't waste half a day of an examiner's time with this. It's close enough.

It doesn't matter if it is shorter or longer.  The tax stamp and paperwork is for the ownership of a SBR.  The BATFE "asks" you to update them on changing specs like o.a.l. and barrel length simply to keep the registry up to date.

Yup. You can update them if you want, but its not required. I had a colt SBR lower that I bought, it transfered to me, and it still says 11.5". I don't know when the last owner sold the upper, but it hasn't had the 11.5" on it in some time.

i'm no lawyer, but i really don't sweat the little stuff like that.

and if the ATF is going after you for a papered gun that varies from its' description 0.2", well, you've got bigger problems.

Ok, I bet that hypothetical person is relieved to see all those posts.

It was just an idea I had and was curious how it would look.  I guess they probably wouldn't be worried about .5 inches.

Thanks for all your posts.
