what would be the minimum barrel diameter you would start with if you were going to have 5/8x24 threads cut on the end of it?

I believe 5/8" threads are .625", so you need a barrel at least .625" in diameter. If you want a shoulder for a muzzle attachment it will need to be at least .7" but better if larger.
