| I've got a couple SBRs and am now thinking about adding an SBS to the collection. The Mossberg 590A1 14" Adjustable looks interesting, but I don't have much experience with Mossbergs. Is the process for acquiring an SBS the same as an SBR? Where can I purchase one of these? |

The process is the same (Form 4) as purchasing a SBR. Check with Clyde Armory. |

Remington occasionally releases 870 Police SBS models onto the civilian market. They're a 14" SBS where you can get a fixed IC or MOD barrel. The 870's mag tube is a little shorter, so you could take that down to 12.5" in 4+1 configuration if you want it a little shorter or add a +1 extension for 14"/5+1 capacity. The 870 also has a steel receiver compared to Mossberg's aluminum - just so you know. The 870 also has over 10 million sold over 60 years, and all 870 receivers only differ from one another in rollmark, mag tube capacity, and finish.
If you want to do your SBS a little cheaper, pick up a used pawnshop 870 Wingmaster ($200-$250), file a Form 1, get engraved, once approved sell off the barrel for about ~$100 on the EE and buy a 18.5" Police barrel for a hair under $100 then cut it down. If you plan to refinish it anyway, find a beater 870 Express, do the above, but as you refinish it swap the extractor, carrier dog follower spring, and sear spring (in the manual, parts #10, 21, & 54) if you want the parts of a Police shotgun. Biggest swap most guys do is the MIM extractor for a milled extractor, runs about $12 or so. If you ever wanna know more about shotguns, come check out arfcom's shotgun forum here in the Armory. We have a some good guys, including a Remington Certified 870/11-87/700P armorer, who hang out in there. |
| I have a bunch (9) SBS...... If you want my advice as a huge SBS fan go with the Wilson Combat Border Patrol with a 12" barrel. I have 3. Get it with the short stock. Mossberg is great on the AOW Serbu I have 5 of those, but for a awesome SBS that is IMHO cheap for what you get go with the Wilson. You will keep it forever and it will be one of your favorite shotguns. Stay away from the Benelli unless you can find the M4 Entry. I was able to get two of those from Elk Castle Arms in TX. But I can't find another for sale. Go with the Wilson. If you don't like it PM me and I will buy it. |
