Hi guys,
I looked around and did some searches, but have come up with nothing.  I'm wanting to get a super short upper for my SBR.  I already have a 10.5" and 11.5" to use with a suppressor, but I am wanting to get something in the 7" range just for fun.

I've seen the Noveske Diplomat uppers that MSTN does, and I really like those.  I have also seen the PWS Diablo piston upper.  Then there is always the Bushy 7" and the DPMS Kitty Kat uppers.  My questions are:

- Which one would you chose and why?
- Did I miss any super short uppers that are available or other options?
- I have built uppers from individual parts before, is building a 7" or 7.5" upper something that is doable and as easy as building any other upper?  Or are there nuances that need to be taken into account for the super short stuff?
- Would you guys forget about the really short upper and go with something else all together?

Thanks for your input and opinions in advance.

I bought my DPMS upper complete back in Jan of 1999 when they was LE only... they did me a favor as a stamp holder.

I have one with a CMMG medcon 7.3" barrel.  With the short barrel try to find a 1/7 twist instead of the 1/9
You will also want an H2 buffer to stop bolt bounce..

I'm going to be using a RRA pistol upper for mine.  I have a 7" RRA pistol upper on my Spikes pistol... so I'm just going to swap it over & sale my pistol lower.

i have an 11'' sbr and my pops decided to out do me and get a 7.5'' sbr, he bought a cmmg  kitty upper and a stag arms lower

it worked fine from the factory.

if you are going to build your own upper, or piece it together i recommend buying an H buffer, a heavier spring, and a full auto bolt carrier, as well as replacing the front sight block pins with the solid taper pins instead of the spring ones
this will insure good reliability

Rainier Arms also makes a 7.5" barrel that i am trying to get my hands on, but they are usually out of stock.

Thanks for the replies guys....I think I might just build it myself as parts become available.  It seems to be the cheaper option, and I can also get everything exactly how I want it.  How does this sound for an upper?

- Flat top upper with M4 cuts
- 7.5" Rainier Arms Barrel
- VLTOR Low Pro Gas Block
- LMT or BCM F/A BCG
- Noveske KX3
- Larue 7.0 Handguard

This is pretty much what MSTN builds, but instead of Noveske, the barrel would be Rainier.  Would you guys change any parts that I have listed or go with something else?  Thanks again in advance for you input.

That sounds good.  I used a Noveske barrel group, since that seemed like a good deal @ $395 including gas tube and bolt, and I got a KX-3 at the same time.  With a DD Lite Rail, the whole thing weighs less than 7 lbs...

I built my 7.5" upper using a Noveske barrel and KX3 on a RRA upper with a YHM free float tube.  It's been a running machine, with only one jam, which was operator error. I'm using the heavy M16 bolt carrier with a standard spring & buffer. What exactly is "bolt bounce" and is it something I need to be concerned about? I've had no problems, but will be taking the rifle to a carbine course in May and want it to perform reliably. To date I have been shooting mostly PMC .223 out of it. I bought 2 cases of Q3131 5.56 ammo for the class. Will the 5.56 ammo need the heavier  buffer?

I'm no expert, but as I understand it, bolt bounce is when the bolt bounces back a little from the barrel when a round is chambered.  Causes light primer strikes, FTF, etc.  I don't think you have to worry about bolt bounce unless in full-auto, since the bolt has a chance to re-seat in semi.  Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, guys.

Where did you guys get your Noveske barrel groups in 7.5"?

Noveske doesn't have them on their website that I can find, and from what I understand...MSTN has a deal with Noveske that they can't sell the 7.5" barrel group alone. They are the only dealer that I know of who uses the 7.5" stuff.

Thanks.

I got my Noveske barrel from Noveske. I ordered it online late last year. It was backordered for a while. It is no longer listed in their online catalog as an individual part for some reason.

I would say buy the Rainer barrel with confidence...great barrel, great company, decent price.  I've been using one with a KX3 and a Y/M M16 BCG and it hasn't skipped a beat yet.   Personally I love my 7.5" for what I use it for.

When you build the 7.5" you have to realize that you are dealing with much higher gas pressures driving the system, and have to design it accordingly.  In order to minimize extraction issues, it is important to keep the action locked up as long as possible.  To do this, I chose an M16 BCG in conjunction with a BCM extractor spring upgrade kit and a RRA 9mm buffer.  Reliability is critical in my line of work...my life and others' lives may depend on the reliability of my weapons and my 7.5" SBR passes the test.

I contacted Noveske about the barrel group, and they said they won't have them in stock for a while (and with them a while means forever) and that when they do get them in they will be put on their website.

Looks like I'll be waiting for the notification email from Rainier when their barrels are back in stock.  Thanks guys.
