The side plate is the serialized part of an M2 much like the lower receiver on an M16. As long as you have a side plates that's registered you can build it up in an M2 configuration your heart desires.

Yup. Buy a registered transferable side plate. Then buy a parts kit, which will include everything except the side plate. Put 'em together and have fun!
