Hope this is the place to post this but this is my question. I am going to convert a 16 in barrel Colt M4 into a 11.5 in Colt M4 for police Dept use (All the forms will be put through the police dept as far as ATF) My question is this if I order a Bushmaster 11.5 will it be able to go onto the Colt. Also if anyone has some suggestions about other SB manufactures I would appreciate it. We are trying to keep the barrels in the 250-300 dollar range. Thank you for the help and all the questions I have gotten answered by reading you alls posts |
no problem. just pull the handguards, pop out the gas tube roll pin, pull the gas tube, and unscrew the barrel nut. reverse the process to install the new barrel. check your uppers first. i'm going to ASSume your uppers have ramps extended down into the upper reciever. unfortunately, most bushy barrels do not come with M4 extensions, so there will be an "edge" under the feedramps where the bullet tip can get stuck. either contact bushy and see if you can get barrels with the correct extensions, or you may have to find another brand (colt, LMT, and others). |

Ok so what I am hearing pretty much is the BM may not the best option to put on the Colts thanks for advice. Based on the responses I have two more questions 1. "The cheapest way would be to have the barrels cut and the gas ports enlarged, assuming they aren't shot out." anyone suggest a gunsmith that does this work and how much it would cost to get done. We are looking at 5 weapons total 2. Are there better barrels to use then the BM and any suggestions of which ones and places to look to find them Again thanks for the help. I am new to this hole SBR we have been useing 16in for a while. |

Here's a good 11.5 inch barrel Contact Adco if you want your current barrels chopped. |

The biggest disadvantage of not using the original barrels will be the loss of the M4 feedramp cuts of the new barrels not matching up with the feedramp cuts in the receivers. The disadvantage of using the factory barrels would be if the gunsmith doing the work did not know what he was doing and either dorcked up the chrome lining or created weapons with goofed up gas ports that do not function well. |

I have not done business withe ADCO myself, but I have looked at them for an AR10 project. I hear nothing but good things on this board and others. If I needed a barrel cut I would use them. There are other barrel manufactures out there who can provide quality barrels for your needs. I have used CMMG with great results. If you get a barrel from a reputable manufacturer and install it on your uppers spent some time at the range. Also make sure a certified armorer does this. There is a little more than just taking the barrel nut off and reversing the process. There are some alignments that can be checked to assure smooth functioning and reduced wear. There is a right and wrong way to remove the barrel from the receive to prevent cracking the receiver. Another issued that is common among short barrels are maintenance issues. I am a Police Officer and I used a 11.5 barrel. It is great. But, I find I have to replace some springs a more often. These are the ejector, extractor, and action springs. With the extractor spring you should have the rubber insert and/or D ring. Feel free to IM or e-mail me for details. Good Luck Mike |
