I have been trying to figure out what sub gun I want. First it was an UZI but now I'm thinking about a MK760 and I really think that is what I am getting. Any opinions on the MK?

Get the uzi.  This is an easy choice.

With so many different conversions it really isn't all that easy.  I think I wan't a built SMG rather then a converted semi auto. So if you have an opinion on the MK760 I'd like to hear it but I wasn't asking for help with a desision.

The MK760 is a basic tube gun and could be considered an offspring of the Karl Gustav Submachine design such as the Swedish K and its direct offspring the S&W 76.

Generally, the MK760 is lower on the totem pole of tube built subguns due to the quality control that was in place at the time of manufacturer.  If memory serves correct there were multiple runs of MK models with the majority made in Alabama and Irving CA by different manufacturers but all the entities were somehow related.  There are quality difference between the different makes and models which are reflected in their price differences.

For the most part these guns should all be running pretty well nowadays after 20 years in circulation, however spare parts are hard to come by and I beleive there is only one or two sources for MK parts.  subguns.com should yield more information along with the dedicated forum over at Uzitalk.

The MK760 is a clone of the S&W 76, which in turn is a clone of the Swedish K. With each generation, reliability declined. With perseverence and a lot of work, you can bring a MK760 to within about 80% of the reliability of a factory Swedish K (which in turn is often equal to an Uzi).

I almost -- almost -- bought an MK760 dirt-cheap a coupla years ago. The seller was Mark Serbu, inventor/builder of the BFG50, the Serbu Sirius, Super Shorty, etc. Despite his extensive knowledge of NFA firearms, he just could not get the thing to run right. After consideration, I decided that if Mark Serbu couldn't make it run, I had no chance. I passed.

If you enjoy owning MGs, holding them, and admiring them, an MK760 is fine. If you enjoy the challenge of trying to make a balky gun work, a MK760 is perfect for you. OTOH, if you are a shooter, in my experience, an MK760 is not a good first MG. Or second. Or third, for that matter.

FWIW. Your Mileage May Vary.

i looked into them a short while back also. consensus was to save the money and buy an uzi.

IIRC, mags are *very* expensive for the 76/760 guns too.

Plenty of MK760s run great.  Some need work to get them running.  I'd shoot an MK760 or buy from someone who I trust.  The S&W76 is VERY reliable and a great gun.  No less reliable than the K.

If you are looking for a first subgun, you can't go wrong with an M11/NINE and Richard Lage's upper.  Great stuff!

Mags are dirt cheap!  Just get the soumi stick mags and grind a tiny bit off the front.  I shoot them exclusively in my S&W76.
