When interstate traveling w/ DD, do you have to get paperwork from the ATF like when traveling w/ a MG, or is a DD exempt from that?  What about an AOW?

Is a 12 gauge shotgun w/ shortbarrel and no shoulder stock an AOW or a DD?

You will need an approved 5320.20 for interstate transport of a DD.  The only NFA items that don't need it are AOWs and suppressors, everything else needs one.

I filed two at the same time for my DD;  One to Oregon and one to my dad's house in Idaho.  I had the dates starting May 1st and running through December 31st.  So I can go to and from those locations any time I want between now and the end of the year.

As for the other question, the answer is "it depends."

If the shotgun started life with a buttstock, and now has a short barrel, it is simply a short barrel shotgun.  If it was a virgin receiver and never had a buttstock attached, and was then made with a short barrel, it is an AOW.  The only shotgun DDs I know of are the Streetsweeper and USAS-12 (I think.)  There are now pump shotguns that have been reclassified as DDs.  There was some talk about Saiga's maybe being classified as DDs.  Once it is classified as a DD, barrel length no longer matters (it can only have one NFA classification.)
