Not close to hearing safe.
Wasted money is subjective

How uncomfortable would it be to shoot without ears

Its the super sonic crack that will get you (and damage your hearing over time).  Many people will shoot AR's with cans and not use ears, but they are damaging their hearing.

Anything over 110 Osha recommends ear plugs. After 140 it recommends ear plugs and over the ear muffs. Even the best cans on the market meter around 130 with 556. No muffs needed but ear plugs still definitely a must. A few will claim to shoot without them but trust me they are definitely doing damage to their hearing.

I don't know how loud yours will be but I shoot a 10.5" 5.56 ar15 with a SDN-6 without ears with no discomfort at all. I try to always have ears on but I do occasionally pop a few rounds off around the house while walking without ears. But for whatever reason my 10.5 does seem pretty quiet.

Disclaimer: I am not advocating shooting without ear pro. Do so at your own risk.

you're still doing damage to your ears.  It may not be a lot per shot, but it does add up.

It's not a waste at all. Instead of having to double-up with plugs and muffs, now you can just wear one or the other. And in the case that you do shoot without hearing protection, the silencer will help significantly. You'll still be doing damage to your hearing, but not as much damage. However, the most important thing about owning a silencer is that it's fun as hell.

Yes I understand that, thus my disclaimer. Like I said I do it occasionally when walking around my property because I don't where ear pro in the woods.

Me too.  Aren't most of the readings done at the muzzle or to the side of it?  Does anyone take a reading at the ears?  Just curious.

I agree with this. Rifle suppressors (outside of 300bo subs) allow me to just use either foam plugs or my Surefire EP3's. Much more comfortable than double protection.
