Has anyone done this upgrade?  How did it work for you?  Does it perform well?

TIA

Do a search on YouTube for his video review - should be a three part series.

EDIT:

Here are the links:

Gem Tech IOU progam part 1

Gemtech OutbackII IOU part 2

Gemtech OutbackII IOU part 3 final video

OK, found him on YouTube.  Seems like the main issue is the monocore coming unscrewed during use and FRP.

Thanks,
Sid

So far I like mine, it took my filled up 2006 OB2 and made it awesome again.  I have not had any issues with it unscrewing yet.  It's going to get a ride on my SMG and 22 WMR in a couple of weeks and get compared to my brother's Spectre 2.  For me it was a no-brainer.

I remember one when the process was announced but not a follow up thread.

My 2007 OBII needs sent in for it.   It's full to the point that it is noticeably loud on my pistols now.

Anyone else with some input on performance? I am thinking of sending mine off also. What's the best way to mail a can? Thanks

I'll have a lot more to say about mine Friday afternoon when I get to put a bunch of rounds through it...  pistol, rifle, SMG, and 22 WMR

yeah, fuck that. No Thanks Gemtech.
My Outback II-D is staying k-baffles. The Silicon oil trick has helped with cleanup on mine and I have a Spectre II also.

I have a AAC Pilot sealed can that I had Gemtech convert with the IOU program.  They did excellent work "jailbreaking" my old can and the new monocore is very nicely done.  When I first got it home (January of 2015) I did have core unscrewing issues.  I've since put teflon tape on the core threads and it doesn't loosen while shooting and I can still take it apart when I need to clean it.

Sound is good.  Yes, it does have some FRP (more on mine as the Pilot tube is longer so the "first chamber" before you hit the core is bigger) but the sound afterwords is very much like my AAC Prodigy.  I'll admit to not shooting it much in the last couple months as I've had a bunch of other 22 cans clear (AAC Prodigy, AAC Element 2, Silencerco Sparrow, and Silencerco Spectre II).  The old Pilot/IOU has kinda fallen to the back of the safe.

I'm glad I did the conversion as I was able to take an old basically useless can and bring it back to life, in a lot of ways better than new.  If my Pilot would have been serviceable I would have never bothered, but as I was able to get all the lead cleaned out and have it converted to a new serviceable monocore, it was a no-brainer for me.

Well, I've put around 600 rounds through my OB2/IOU in the last day and a half and must say I really like it.  Hosts used so far this weekend have been P22, 10/22, 4" AR 22 SBR, and 77/22 WMR rifle.  Stupid, stupid quiet on a rifle.  On the P22 it sounds great but there is a little FRP compared to Spectre 2 using identical guns and ammo side by side.  I think the two cans sounded about the same on the pistols other than FRP.   Today were going to have an unbiased observer tell us which sounds quieter.  On the WMR it was fantastic, no ears required!  The fact that the can weighs almost nothing makes it a pleasure to shoot on any host.  I'm glad I did the upgrade because my 2006 OB2 was basically full and unusable when I sent it in.  Eight years of shooting anything and everything will do that to a sealed can.  Today it will get a ride on my M11/22 SMG, looking forward to it.  I had ZERO issues with it unscrewing from the core.  I did use a 1/4" drive ratchet to loosen and retighten the core after shooting to prevent it from getting stuck, I do that with my Prodigy and it seems to work well.  The fact that they put a 1/4" drive hole on the front is pure genius.

Definitely positive thus far.  I didn't get time to shoot it on the SMG today, hopefully will tomorrow.  I can, however, verify that it has NO effect on group size.  I had the barrel on my trusty 77/22 WMR threaded for using with the IOU can.  I was a little worried that the can would impact the accuracy of this barrel that has been simply outstanding for the last sixteen years and many thousands of rounds.  Today proved that it still shoots lights out every time.  Avg group size at 150 yards was about 2" with the can today which is identical to what it always was without.  At 100 yd is was under an inch still.  Tomorrow I should be able to check for POI shift with and without the can, I really hope it is minimal since the weight is basically negligible.  I also took it apart afterward to show a friend, with a 1/4 ratchet it came apart no problem.  So far about 600 rounds of 22 LR and 100 of 22 WMR.

I have pretty much given up on gemtech and recommend friends avoid them, having said that, my ob2 is so full that it is almost useless at this point, so if I could have it changed over to the ob2d version, I would consider it. Monocoque only? Nope, not worth dumping more $ into it, I'll stick with my sparrow.

On special request, we can make it the Outback-IID version. This will, however, require more frequent and more detailed service.

I love my IOU Upgrade!  Sadly, my original 2002 era Outback had put on some weight over the years. (More than .3 ounces!) After many thousands of rounds of giggles its performance had degraded significantly and no method of cleaning would help.  So I packed it up and sent it in for the upgrade last April.  It came back quickly in about 3 weeks, with some extra goodies in the box and WOW what a difference.

Anecdotal evidence would indicated it is a slightly louder than my Bowers Paradigm or AAC Prodigy.  However, when I factor in the cost, it’s a win!  I had a basically end-of-life can that was given a renewed life and made user serviceable for far less funds than a new top end can + tax stamp.  Another consideration was the original outback had aluminum threads in the end cap, which was replaced with a titanium insert.  Overall, I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Even with some of the negative comments, for those of us with a sealed can, this ould eventually have to be done. Mine is getting louder so i think I will have to send it in. So, what is the preferred method of shipping a can back in? Maybe PHD can comment since he is he one its going back to. Thank

Send it to the main office at 335 N. Edgewood Ln, #150, Eagle, ID 83616. Preferred method us UPS or FEDEX and include payment information. I believe this information is on our web site (I know the repair letter is). Need to also send a copy of the face of the F4 as proof of ownership. (Repair letter and ownership proof are ATF requirements for sending without a Form 5).

The Monocore upgrade is far simpler on maintenance, and unscrewing issues are easily fixed with a little Teflon tape from the plumbing section of Home Depot. The OB-2D upgrade can be done, although it is a little more labor intensive in cleaning. As far as sound levels go, they are identical on a rifle with no pop. On a pistol, the monocore has a greater first round pop (easily cured with a small dab of Vaseline on the rear end of the core), but after the first round, they are almost identical. Cost is the same.
