I have a Saker 762 that should be breaking out of jail very soon.

I'm torn as to a bolt action host. Primary use is hunting so most of the pre-threaded tactical guns are heavier than I'm interested in.

Ruger GSR and Savage Hog Hunter along with a few other factory threaded bolts are under consideration but none offer what I really want.

If i get the 1/2x26 direct thread module for the Saker 762 can I pretty much buy any rifle I want and cut it to 16-18", have it threaded and be good to go? I realize SiCo recommends minimum shoulder thickness for the trifecta FH and MB but does that apply to direct thread too?

As an example could I get a Tikka T3 in 7mm-08 and chop it down to 16, thread it to 1/2x26 and be good to go? Have a local gunsmith but he really didn't inspire confidence in his suppressor threading knowledge.

Thanks for any guidance.

edited for clarity.

Have you verified wall thickness on a tikka 7-08?
Send it to adco or Morgan at Class III machining

Savage actions are easy to rebarrel with some simple tools.  Have you thought about buying a cheaper Savage rifle and putting a threaded barrel on it?

Thanks all for the feedback. I have considered a Savage and have a Model 111. I was hoping to have something in hand for deer season and a few barrel makers I checked had 6-12 month waits. Since my 111 is long action I'd be open to 25-06.

So SiCo's thread specs state .46" for a 1/2x28 thread. Assuming a .308 muzzle that gives you .16 meat to support the muzzle and suppressor- that strong enough?

Before you go too far, it's 1/2x28 thread.

Try Blackhole Weaponry.  They can get you a barrel in 6-12 weeks according to their website and they do threading.  I'm happy with my BHW AR10 barrel!

Call Jim at Northland shooter supply. (google for website)

They show to have a Criterion 26" small shank 7mm-08 in stock with your choice of heavy sporter or varmint contour. Have it cut down and threaded to your specs. I'm not sure what size shank you need with that action, but Jim is knowlegable, and will take the time to make sure you're comfortable with the build.

I bought from him on my model 10 in 243 that I rebarreled to a 260 rem and love it.

Just wanted to make sure, but why do you want 1/2x28? When you get a bigger bullet that makes the wall pretty thin, it typically goes up to 5/8x24 when you go to bigger calibers.

Take a look at the Tikka CTR. Comes in 260 and 308, 20" threaded.
