Being new to suppressors I was wondering how a 9mm and a 300bo compare in sound out of a 16 inch barrel. I really don't want to get into another round as I have just consulated to. 22 9mm . 22 9mm 5.56 and 308. |

The advantage to 300 Blackout is that you get the ability to shoot supersonic loads most of the time but subsonic when you need to. If you are choosing a round to suppress, subsonic 300 Blackout is quieter than everything but 22 LR. I prefer 9mm, myself, because you can shoot heavy 147 or 158 gr loads out of your sidearm and rifle whereas the BLK round is strictly a rifle deal. (no, a 300 BLK pistol is not a sidearm, it is just an SBR without a stock).
That said, if you have only one suppressor, you can get away with getting a quality 30 caliber QD suppressor and using it on .308, 556, and 300 BLK. If you have a 9mm carbine, you'll need a 9mm suppressor that probably won't work with your .223 or .308, though I think Liberty has one that is rated for slow-fire .223. Were it me, I would get three suppressors: A 30 caliber, a 45 caliber, and a .22 lr caliber. I cover most of the calibers including 44 Magnum carbine and .300 Winchester Magnum. You have to decide if you want one versatile suppressor (Liberty Myxtic X is probably best option here) that leaves out the .308 or two suppressors that cover EVERYTHING you have or possibly three that cover .22 LR better. |

I can make my 300 BLK loads using Hornady 90 gr XTP out of a Handi-Rifle sound like a mouse fart. But if you're considering AR platforms, I'll take a 9mm AR over 300 BLK in a heartbeat. From a sound perspective, both are pretty quiet but the ammo costs clearly tip the scales in the favor of 9mm. I can load 5-7 9mm subs for every round of 300 BLK sub and more ammo equals more shooting fun. |

I would not shoot lead .30 cal bullets through a mouth-sh**er like the AR-15 with a DI gas system. |

I still don't get a warm and fuzzy on it just yet, but if it's another option talk about a way to really lower the cost of shooting! |

This was in the early 90's. I never noticed a hint of leading anywhere and that was in the days before fancy bullet lubes. Coated bullets are the bees knees... but I do love me some beeswax-based bullet lube! No beating that smell. |

I've tried coated lead bullets and had terrible time with excessive leading. I have switched to FMJ only now as a leaded up centerfire can won't be that easy to clean down the road. Quoted:

May I ask what particular brand of coated bullet you were using? This seems counter to what I've read about other people. I do not have a significant amount of experience with coated bullets... yet. I found Missouri Bullet Company and they seem to have a better selection including 300 gr .44's for my CVA single-shot. Quoted:
If you are shooting both out af an AR platform the 300 will be noticably quieter. The 9mm has a significant pop out of the ejection port due to the blow back design. I know it's all subjective, but I have had exactly the opposite results. 300 Blackout port pop was much louder than that of the 9mm carbine. I am using an Octane 45, though, and there is much less back pressure, I'd imagine, than a 9mm can. I'm also using 147gr loads that are subsonic out of my 16" barrel. |
