I had a couple long calls with Surefire and Silencer Shop yesterday regarding the SOCOM 556 RC, the 556 SB, and the 556 MG. If you've looked at the specs, the SB and RC are the same external size and weigh the same. The MG is about an inch and a half longer and weighs much more. The MG has much thicker baffles and is designed for use on belt-fed MG's firing long bursts. The difference between the SB and RC is that they took the super thick blast baffle from the MG and stuck it in the SB. Everything else is the same as the RC.
Warranty for barrel length is down to 10" on the RC and the SB is warrantied for barrels "shorter than 10". I asked if a 7.5" barrel was covered and Surefire said yes. They would also re-core due to baffle erosion. The SB does meter a little higher than the RC because the thicker blast baffle cuts down on volume in the can. Silencer Shop states as a shooter you can't here the difference, but the meter can. Anyway, I picked up a second SB this morning instead of an RC. Silencer Shop restocked on the RC, but the price is back up over $1100. The SB is still at the lower $963. For a thicker blast baffle and basically the same sound suppression and $200 less, it's a no-brainer..... |

My understanding was the SB were bored larger to accommodate unstable rounds from super short barrels. I specifically asked that question and was told that no, that is not the case. Just the thicker blast baffle. I also asked in relation to the 762-Mini as it is the same outside size as the SB and RC 556. The warranty for the 762-Mini is 10" for 556 as it has the same baffle thickness as the RC. ETA - I also spoke for a while yesterday with Silencerco about the Saker 762 (probably my next purchase). 7" on 556 and 300 blackout, 12" on 308, 24" on the 30 cal magnum rounds up to 300 RUM. |

I will tell you this. The 556MG has a .335" bore. I talked to Surefire, and was told the bore was oversized to control the gas pressure and cyclic rate of a belt fed mg. The 556 RC has a .280" bore. I have both models, and they sound completely the same. I suspect this is due to the added volume on the 556mg.....but that mg can is heavy! But, a freaking tank! |

The form 3 for my first 556 SB should be clearing any time. I'll compare the exit to the 556 mini and the 762 RC that are waiting on form 4. Wonder if it's just the first blast baffle on the SB that has a bigger bore..... |

I was worried about the sound signature of the MG, but it's completely acceptable. |
