For a Ruger 10/22 and MP15/22, what would be a great can to utilize for both?  Secondarily, would you recommend getting a stamp and having the barrel on each cut?

Spectre II
Chop them both ETA: after you have stamps

Sparrow. Yes.

Perferably I'd get a dedicated .22 upper over the S&W, but not a bad option.

On my lower, for which I currently have a stamp, would I need to make any modifications in order to use a dedicated upper and how reliable are are mag blocks?

Spectre II, especially if you're going to cut them down. My ~16.5" M&P 15-22 barrel now fits conveniently in my hand.

Not sure you'd cut a 10/22 barrel that short, but the 15-22 now has a barrel about the same length as my M&P 22. Spectre has less FRP in a pistol length barrel.

Ya, cmmg .22 upper.

I would configure it to be the general shape and size of my primary rifle. YMMV

Would any modifications be required for my current lower?

BW, did you just cut down the original handguard or get a new one?

Cut mine down...cause it was free.

I figured I could see how I liked it, and would have the option to change it out later. Have to buy the adapter and new handguard. All I needed was a saw and a piece of sandpaper. There are a couple pics here.

I honestly have no experience with the M&P15-22 rifle so I can't say if a CMMG upper will work on that lower.
Sorry

My current lower would be from a regular AR...

Check out the 4" AR15-22LR upper from TACCOM; silly quiet with bulk ammo using a can. (And it is soooo... cute!)
Or a CMMG with a 4" - 4.5" barrel.
It will work well on a regular AR lower.
You will need either a SBR stamp or reconvert it back into pistol mode to be legal for a barrel under 16" long.

You may need to buy an extra hammer and modify it to a flat hammer style and use a lighter hammer spring (JP yellow spring?) to get .22LR to run right in the AR or not.
Black Dog AR-22 magazines with the steel lips (check out a site sponsor with 44 in the name)
I'm trying to decide whether to use the carbine or mid-length YHM lightweight rail/handguard; and they make a pistol length lightweight handguard also.

The 10/22 I would just buy one with a threaded 16" barrel or buy something like the Thompson Machine 10/22 integral suppressed barrel.

Spectre II
Sparrow
Essence
Kodiak TL
Element2 (better for short barrels-pistol length)
who else am I forgetting; lot of good .22 cans out there

Order is in for the Spectre II, and I'm looking at the CMMG barrels for a dedicated upper (not decided on barrel length yet)...

Yup. Just ordered a spectre 2 as well. I was inspired by Bigwaylons M&P 15-22. I'll pick one of those up as soon as my can gets approved...maybe not
