Hey all, looking for any folks who might have first hand experience with running a QD can under a FF handguard.
I couldn't resist the shorty temptation any longer after PSA put a big chunk of the components on sale for Easter this week and I'm building a AR Pistol (to be SBR'd) and with everything ordered but the barrel and forearm I'm down to trying to figure out those. I'd like to run the system with a longer forearm for a few reasons, longer sight radius for BUIS, I'm 6'4 with arms to match so scrunching up on a short forearm for me isn't great and I'd like to reduce can 'branding' and pants burning during transitions to side arm after a few mag dumps. A smoking hot can on your thigh / groin area is... eye opening. My concern obviously is getting the thing on/off. The specifics are it's a AR in 300bo, either a 8.5 or 10.5 barrel (still trying make up my mind there, longer barrel if I can't run the can under the ff so I can get another 2" of forearm length, shorter barrel if I can run it under a FF. I'm leaning toward a Midwest Industries forearm, I really like the two I'm currently using and the price is great. The can (another couple of months hopefully) is a Specwar 7.62. I have a Octane 45 HD I'll use just for subs while I wait but the 7.62 is what I'm planning on this system for the extra 10-12db noise reduction and secure lockup. So long story short, anyone know how much of a PITA it is to run a Specwar 7.62 under a FF forearm and if so what FFF's work or don't work or work 'well enough'. I don't need a 'tool-less' removal or a 3 second removal but I do need to be able to remove it as it'll also be used on another host from time to time. For the curious and since it seems to be a thing, the build is listed out below. This is designed to be a 'moderate bargain' build, saving money where it doesn't effect function but with a few minor upgrades here and there. I don't 'need' another system, I don't 'need' an SBR, I don't 'need' my wife yelling at me, I just wanted a cool little system to satisfy the kid in me. And of course for being able to take out zombies silently without pulling a horde of them down on me -

I don't see you running high volumes of fire through a .300, but there will be some heat transfer.
I've got a Ti Phantom in jail to run on my 8" .300 with a 11" rail, I even sleeved the rail to shooting it unsuppressed would be safe from blast with my hand on the front of the rail. |

I thought about heat but, not having shot a 300bo at all much less through a can, in just looking at the materials involved in the subsonic loads, I didn't think it would be too bad? I know the slimline furniture on my HK91 does get a tad warmish with long strings of quick firing but I'm making an assumption that 300bo runs significantly less? From what I've seen on the numbers it's going to run a little warmer than say a .45 pistol?
If it's not really going to work the 2" OAL increase from using a 10.5" versus a 8.5" isn't a showtopper. And I have, best case 10 weeks before I have a real chance of breaking the specwar out of jail. So plenty of time to make a final choice. But I really do like the look of the suppressor peeking out in the forearm. :) |
