| With the SOMCOMs out now, is Surefire still making their legacy models (eg 762k)? |
|
Considering they can not keep up with demand for the socom line its unlikely that they would put those on hold. And why would they. No old mounts means you need a new can.
This is the biggest issue with getting a new can. Companies are making cans that will last a lifetime but dump their mount design for something more tactical two years down the road |

Availability of legacy mounts for suppressors is a fairly common complaint in the industry.
Shameless plug: At Gemtech, it is our policy that any quick-detach suppressor we manufacture will mount on any of the Quickmounts (bi-lock mounts) we have ever produced regardless of vintage. If you have a QD suppressor from 1996, it mounts on current bi-lock mounts and any current QD suppresor mounts on any bi-lock flash hider we have built -- even back to 1996 when we introduced the system. Further as a safety factor with our system, any .30 caliber QD suppressor mounts on any .30 or .223 caliber mount, but the .223 suppressors will not mount on a .30 caliber bi-lock. |

The legacy mounts are still available - in fact I just got one a few weeks back from Brownells.
FWIW Surefire mounts are like the Gemtech mount in that a 7.62 can will go on a 5.56 mount, but not vice versa to prevent unintentional hilarity. I know this from personal experience as I've only used my 762K on my AR15 (so far). I do appreciate that Gemtech leave their prior supressor purchasers in the dust and maintains compatability - I'm not sure what Surefire got out of changing their mount. |

I agree that the old mounts are still available, and I suggest that anyone with a legacy can should spend a few bucks and get them now while you are able. As to the downward compatability of the legacy models, I understand that the end mount designs may work, but there has been some confusion and flip flopping by Surefire as to compatability of the back-over-the-barrel design cans like the 762SS and FA556AR. I've got a few different mounts for the FA556AR lying around and it appears to me that the rear portion of a couple of these mounts are different. So, perhaps this is why some people have, some people haven't been able to mount the 762SS on a FA556AR mount, and Surefire has said both "yes" and "no" to whether it would work. |

Yes we will continue to produce the top selling adapters for the previous generation suppressors. We did scale back on the number of models to keep up with production but we several models for different thread specs for each model of suppressor. What about the cans themselves? |

Considering that even when 100 percent of production was dedicated to their legacy designs they couldn't keep up with demand, its absurd to believe that with limited runs one will be able to track down say a 1/2x28 762 brake a couple years down the road. Sure surefire may make a better can than say gemtech but what good is it if you cant find addition mounts for a new rifle. So your left with a paperweight or ratfucking rifles so you can use your can. Same shit with aac. When they dump their 90 tooth design like they dumped their 18 and 51 tooth models your left holding your dick in your hand till one shows up somewhere. |

This is the reason to spend the cash NOW, to get a few mounts.
I applaud Gemtech's approach to this (and pretty much every other) potentially sticky situation, however I can see that, unless you are 100% satisfied with your mounting system, it could prevent innovation in the mounting system department. It is difficult to have it both ways. Quoted:

It's really not that hard and it's actually the best time to do it because people are clearing inventory/ replacing with the latest and greatest/ etc. I'd agree with you if a company was changing mounts every SHOT show but that's not the case here. You can't blame a company for being innovative or pushing an envelope. I saw the writing on the wall and picked up a couple extra muzzle devices at good prices for future use. |

Which mount models were "scaled back" and will no longer be produced? |
