I currently have an AAC M42K on a 5.56 cal, 16 in mid-length, AR. If I shorten the 16in barrell to 12 inches will the rifle be a lot louder when shooting it? Will I notice a difference in how the rifle handles?
I would think bringing the weight of the suppressor 4 inches closer to the shooter would make it easier to handle and feel lighter overall. Although, if this causes the rifle to become a lot louder it might not be worth it.. |

Quoted:
It's not going to be any louder with a can on it. The noise from a suppressed 5.56 comes from the sonic crack, which will not change with barrel length. False. The shorter the barrel the louder the gun even with a can. Shorter barrel means greater psi at muzzle. In fact psi doubles from a 18"" to a 10.3"". Which is why most companies don't ensure their cans below a certain barrel length. The sonic crack you speak of is present no matter what barrel length. Sound and psi are greatly affected though. |

Cincy is spot on here. Sound at the shooters ear is typically more due to the pressure at the muzzle and less the sonic crack that occurs downrange. To answer the OP's question the answer is twofold. Going from 16 to 12 will increase sound and backpressure. Essentially you have removed 4" of space that gas can dissipate into, thus increasing the backpressure. In regards to handling- hell yeah it's better. I have 3 5.56 SBR's and they are all 12-12.7". WIth the can on it still handles like a 16" carbine. I also get a longer handguard and better ballistics over a 10-11" barrel. 12" is the sweet spot when it comes to SBR's. for me. I don't have any requirements that would make me want to go shorter than 12". My advice would be to form 1 the hell out of that gun and get a quality 12.5" barrel for it like a Daniel Defense or Noveske. |
| Good read...FWIW, they recommend 14.5": http://sadefensejournal.com/wp/?p=1093 |

I appreciate everyone's replies! I have a lot to learn..
From what I have read 12 - 13 inches seems like a good length. How will shortening the barrel affect the suppressor(M42K)? Will it shorten the life of the suppressor? How long must a barrel be to use a mid-length gas system? At what point do you switch to a carbine length system? |
