OK I am going to get a suppressor. I want to mount it on a 5.56 rifle.
why does everyone tell me that I should get the 7.62 model?
Is there a performance benefit or is it simply the versatility of of the larger bore?

for reference, I'm looking at the YHM Phantoms.

thanks for any input.

Reason is, you will have more flexibility in caliber choices with a 7.62.

If you buy a 5.56 can you can only use it on rifles with a bore equal to or smaller to 5.56. With a 7.62 you can use it on anything down.

Don't say "I will only put it on a 5.56 and never put it on anything else" either. Because once you shoot it with the suppressor, you will never buy another gun that isn't a suppressor host, believe me.

I bought a 7.62 QD Phantom when I only owned a 5.56 AR. I now use it on my .300 BLKOUT, 5.56, .308 AR and .308 Scout rifle.

EDIT: Also, there is not much difference in sound when comparing the 5.56 and 7.62 can.

This, except I went with an AAC 762-SDN to move between platforms and YHM 3200 specifically for my Colt.

I have an AAC 762SD and shoot it in 300BLK, 6.8, and 5.56. The only difference I can tell from the caliber specific cans is the tone. It just sounds difference, not necessarily louder at least by these ears.

If I had it to do all over again I would have bought my YHM Phantom QD 7.62 and wouldn't have bought a .223 can.

My Phantom is in jail starting 6 month wait, if I had purchased this can 10 months ago, I would have an Octane 45 pending

OK. it sounds like I know enough to understand that you guys know more than me. I need to take some advice from someone else for once.

I would look at a 7.62 Mini suppressor. Same size and weight as 5.56, but can suppress 7.62...Surefire Socom perhaps.

I own multiple silencers, and I must say the .22 can gets way more use than any of the others.  I'm not trying to steer you away from a different can, but don't cut yourself short by not owning a rimfire can right out of the gate!  Maybe get 2 cans at the same time?  ha ha!

I got a 223 can first, then a .30 cal, if I had to do it over I guess I'd do it the same way, but I did end up getting a 30 cal host before the can was out of jail.

good luck, you will be one of the cool kids now.
