The other day I took my 10/22 build with Sparrow SS to the range and shot some paper. I used bulk box stuff to get it close, and then some Remington Target to get it zeroed in all the way with. It was shooting really nice groups right on my POA so I decided to shoot some through my chronograph. I did not shoot any targets, just put 50 rounds through the chronograph to get a good idea of the ammo's velocity. I then removed the Sparrow to open it and see how dirty it got (This was my first real range session with it). I knocked the looses stuff out and put it back together, then reattached it to my rifle.
I then shot for a few more groups and found I was now hitting a good six inches high and right! I got it moved back to a decent zero, but it was now not shooting good groups. I checked my rifle over and the s,ope was still mounted tight, action screw tight, barrel not touching anywhere it shouldn't, etc. I just couldn't figure this one out.. I went home and cleaned everything up and still nothing seemed amiss. would removing and reinstalling the suppressor affect POI like that? Do I have to re-zero every time I remove and reinstall it? I have not yet had a chance to go and recheck things, not that it matters as I can't afford any bullets at the moment anyway. Any ideas though? |

I don't think it ever really got that warm. It was about 45* F out that day and when I checked the can for tightness and when I removed it I did not use a glove. It was always after finishing a magazine of 10 and it never felt even warm.
That is something to consider though. I know I will have to rezero, as I am seriously considering optically zeroing my scope and just starting all over. |
| My experience has shown that changes in temp will change your POI. That's one of the reasons marksmen keep data books, to track the shift in POI during different conditions. Barrel harmonics are going to change with more weight hangining off the end of your barrel. The thing I can't explain is why your grouping shifted upwards. I've always seen a shift downwards with both the addition of cold and a can. The only thing I can think of to explain this is to check for baffel strikes. |
