Friend of mine is thinking " Why not get a take apart suppressor large enough for 308 and with bushings to fit all pistol calibers including 22"? Is this possible, reasonable or what? I said if it was doable, then why would there be so many choices in suppressors for all of these calibers. Educate me on this .
Thanks,
BravoCharlie

ATF considers enlarging supressor bore to be manufacturing a new supressor. Also, all of the supressor internals are controlled parts, no spares available.

You can legally have a larger bore can and run it on anything that will fit through it, but can't have a variable can.

ETA: now that I reread, it is fine to have a single can with multiple mounts.     Multiple baffles are a no go.

You can get a .308 can like the AAC 762SD-N6 is great for many rifle calibers. I would not want a take apart rifle can though, really no need for it. But I wouldn't shoot .22lr through a rifle can. However get a .45acp take apart can like the AAC Ti-Rant and you can shoot all the pistol calibers like 9mm, 40, 45acp, and .22lr. Of course personally I don't shoot .22lr that much, and it's so dirty, I would really want a detected .22lr can if I was going to shoot it a lot.

Liberty mystic is a take apart can, 9mm base caliber. It can be used on .308 (subsonic only), 5.56 (watch for overheating), 300blk, whisper, and a hundred other calibers.

Part of the problem is, a can that is rated for centerfire rifles is going to be REALLY heavy and awkward on a centerfire pistol and RIDICULOUS on a .22lr firearm.

That's the exact same can he was thinking about getting. What do you think about shooting 22 cal. through it?

It will not be near as quiet as using a real 22 can because the bore is way oversize.

That is true, but you can look at it from another perspective.

I am considering a Liberty Constitution for use on .22lr, 5.45, and 5.56.  (I can clean the dirty .22 and the corrosive 5.45.)

It will be overkill on my .22, but then, I will be used to the handling  when I switch to the other calibers.

I guess it just depends on what .22 host you're using it on.

The Constitution is a HEAVY can. It weighs 24 ounces. That's 4 ounces heavier than the YHM Phantom. If you're only using it on rifles, you'll be OK, though it will still feel heavy. It's going to be stupid heavy on a .22 pistol though. It weighs 1 1/2 lbs more than my Prodigy and 1/2 lb more than my M4-2000.

I agree. I'm all for multicaliber cans, but I maintain that rifle caliber cans are for rifles, pistol caliber cans are for pistols, and .22 Sparrows are for .22s. The Constitution is a can I would never be satisfied with. It weighs more than my 762-SDN-6 by about 4 ounces. And that's supposed to be a useful .22 can?

My philosophy on a can is this:
Buy the largest practical multicaliber rifle can you need. That does not mean a .50BMG, it means most likely a .308. This can be used on all your rifles including bolt actions, .308 ARs, AR-15s, etc.
Next buy the largest multicaliber pistol can you need. Be it .45, .40, or just a 9mm if that's all you plan on shooting. These can be used on lever actions, pistol caliber ARs, and of course pistols.
Finally, buy a .22 Sparrow.

If you start at the top, then you're ultimately better off. By suppressing your rifles first, you can still hear when you reach your thirties. Also, by buying overbore silencers, you're not stuck suppressing some of your rifles or some of your pistols like when your first purchase is a .223 can.

I actually called Liberty this morning to ask several questions before I pull the trigger. I asked about the difference in sound between the Mystic and the Kodiak for 22lr. He told me that the Mystic is slightly louder, but most people can't really hear the difference. The reason being volume.

Only for rifles.

Mainly choosing it because I can use it for 5.45 and take it apart and clean it.  Seems like a good idea with corrosive ammo.

Now that I think about it though, it seems like at least one mfg. said that corrosive 5.45 was GTG in their cans.

Might have to look into that and buy that one, and a dedicated .22 can.
