I am going to be one of the new converts over to NFA since the new Wa law that will go into effect. I already have a trust setup and a 762sd with my paperwork being sent in about 2weeks ago. I have recently found a guy that has the ability (machines etc etc ) that can make suppressors.

My questions are :

1. If I send in my form 1's to make a suppressor and when they come back, how long can I wait before I actually build the suppressor? Reason I ask is that I might be gone working when the come back.

2. I am personally mechanically retarded, however the guy I mention is not. If I am there useing his equipment and he is helping me (guiding me) through the building of the suppressor is this ok?

Thanks for your help, and I am sure this info is somewhere on here but my search fu is weak!!!

You can't make it till your form 1 comes back. Then I think you have as long as you want to make it.

Not sure about that other part. But if the other guy is not making the parts I don't see what would be the problem.

Thanks for the reply, I know I have to wait for the form 1's to come back I just was not sure if I had a time limit so to speak to get the suppressor built. I do agree that as long as the other guy is not actually making the parts and building it that I would be ok, I just wasnt sure if him guiding and helping me would screw me.

Thanks again for the reply,

As far as help, that's fine as long as you're the one building it. As for time frame I think you have 1 year. I could be wrong on that. It could be an indefinite about of time. However, I would think that the longer you don't have an item that is papered the more chances you have of something going wrong. Say, for example, you're questioned for whatever reason as to the whereabouts of said NFA item that you have a Form1 for and you're not in possession of it 5 years from the date of possessing said Form1.  Make sense?

Makes complete sense, I was just wondering since I tend to leave for months at a time for work and could be gone up to 6months after I get the form 1s back. Thanks for the info,

When I spoke to the NFA branch, I was told you have one year from the the date you signed your forms to send them in, and however long you wanted to build it.  They don't care as long as they have your money.

Why would you ever be questioned about it?  The ATF never checks in on non-FFL's.  They have no legal grounds to come question you about it.

The time frame thing was just a hypothetical. A far reaching one? probably but still hypothetical.

Thanks for clarifying the year thing. I couldn't remember what that was for!
