I would like to LEGALLY(!!!!!!!!) build my own suppressor.  There are several literary references available on Amazon.com ranging $15-$85, so while any suggestions/advise during the production process would be appreciated, that is not the purpose of this post...

Most importantly, what paperwork/forms do I need to submit to the BATFE in order to get their blessing and not do time in Florence (our local Federal Prison)?  Is it as simple as an application and a $200 tax stamp, or will I need to register as a NFA manufacturer?

Any and all advise is welcomed.

You MUST have an approved Form 1 back in your hands before you begin machining even one part.  I came real close to building one, but in the end it was cheaper/easier to just buy off the shelf.

i definitely see cheaper/easier, a big part of this for me is to learn about how it works as well as have a suppressor that I built myself

thx

Silencertalk silencersmithing forums

Go there, more information than 90% of the books will give you.  Helpful people who have done form 1 cans that are willing to share/help.

Edit:  Read a lot first, go through all the pages possible.  There are threads there that are years old with great info.

If you are looking for info on designing and making your own silencer, then the books on Amazon suckkkkkkkkkkkk.  The ones that have plans in them are typically made from plastic, mesh, washers, tape, hose clamps and other crap.  They are bulky, cover the sights, degrade accuracy and may blow up in your face.  Al Paulson's reference books are nice, but they are not a how-to on making your own, they are more of a history reference.  I have both of Paulson's books and like them.  The other ones I read were worthless in my opinion.

SilencerTalk is the place to go.  I have some drawings if you want to see them.  I have posted some on this forum too.  If you have access to a lathe, then you can make a good silencer, is it easy.  No one is ever denied authorization to make a silencer by the ATF as long as the paperwork is filled out correctly.  You can have others make the parts for you, but you have to be present while they work on them and take them home at the end of the day.
