Is it comfortable to shoot without hearing protection?  How quiet is it with subsonics?

I find it easily comfortable enough to shoot w/o additional hearing protection, using both the 5.56 and the 7.62 in 16" - 20" barrels.  YMMV.  Never shot it with subsonic loads...

I think my 7.62 phantom is hearing safe on my 16in ar 5.56 and my bolt savage 10fcp 24in barrel.  I shoot subs with both guns, I would easily compare them to an air rifle, its crazy.
I haven't wore hearing protection since paperwork came back. Now my guns have built in ear-plugs.

In a good location outdoors, I don't mind shooting without ears (16" barrel). The 14"bbl is a bit louder.   Under a shelter, or indoors, I like ears too but I'm a wimp that way.   But if something went bump in the night, I'm not worried if I dont have ears for a few rounds.

With subsonic 55gr, yeah, it's incredibly quiet. No ears there.

ETA: 14.5" bbl with SS phantom video here.. Maybe someday I'll embed !

Pretty much this:

Both my 556 and the 762 QD models are hearing safe outdoors.  If I'm inside or under cover I'll throw some muffs on cause it's a little much.  With subsonic ammo; it's just sick.  Sounds like an airsoft without the electric motor noise.  The target impact is by far louder than the firing.

Are the flash hiders extra or does one come with the can?  Also. Any preference for the brake over a standard flash hider?

It comes with one hider and you can buy more if needed

One flash hider mount comes with it.  You can specify the thread type when your dealer places the order.

A QD can will come with a flash hider. The cheaper cans are thread-on.

I have a flash hider on my 14.5" and a brake on my 16".

The 16" upper with a brake is what I use when I let noobs shoot the M16.  It has very little muzzle rise.   I do not think there would be much value in using one on a semi build - because there isn't that much recoil.  But in auto fire it is much more controlable with the brake , absolutely.   IMO the brake does its job well, but do you have a job that it needs doing ?

And the brake is loud, which can be cool in it's own special way

I just remember reading somewhere that using a break will put less wear and tear on the can.   This can will be used on my 16" and 18" ar's. I'm planning a sbr for the near future too.

If you're using a 16 or 18 inch barrel, you likely won't notice much erosion.

The beat-up baffle stacks you're seeing posted here are probably from 10.5 inch barrels––muzzle brake mounts help on those, but are just prolonging the inevitable. Any suppressor, from any manufacturer, is going to show wear on those barrel lengths, but some are more tolerant than others.

i've been beating the crap out of mine on little 10.5" guns since i got it - several thousand rounds later, it looks exactly like it did when i bought it. YHM will warranty that can even when used on short barreled full auto guns, which means they considered some serious abuse when they designed it. it'll hold up just fine...

as far as sound, when the SS came out it tested better than an equivalent can by the other brand that is considered "top dog" by a lot of folks...  the other company may have taken that title back by now, but in the end we're haggling over single decibels.

from the standpoint of how it sounds to the shooter, well, every 556 can i've ever used on any configuration AR has made my ears ring. they ALL sound loud to me, and i don't shoot any of them without ear pro.
