How much of a difference is there in sound reduction? Is it noticable to the ear?

They both sound roughly the same.

The YHM 762 Phantom is built like a tank and weighs almost as much as a tank.  762 SD is much lighter, makes a huge difference in the way the weapon handles.  YHM has the more superior mounting system though.

I wish they'd do the 762SD in 51T already.

I love my YHM Phantom 762 and 556.  Yes, they are a bit heavy, but that wasn't a big concern of mine.  I wanted a good overall value and the YHM products fit the bill PERFECT!  Love them, prolly gonna buy another Phantom 762 someday just cause.

The 556 Phantom SS weight is not as bad, very manageable and on par with any other can out there.  It's the 762 Phantom SS that is a tank

Based on the only formal tests, that I know of, the AAC meters as having slightly less db.

Some people say they can hear the db difference, some say they cannot.

Not everyone can go somewhere to hear them side by side but each can has a different frequency to it which may sway some people's decisions.

I would be using it on normal length and SBRed 223/556 cals, 300 Whisper SBRs, as well as semi auto and bolt action 308s.

I didn't want something that heavy on a shorty and don't currently see the need to buy a dedicated 223/556 can so this was my "all purpose" can for my rifles.

I chose the AAC as it sounded better to me, especially on an AR15, and is lighter.

Those were my two main criteria so I didn't really care about the other stuff.

Think about some of the other factors that the others mentioned above that may matter to you like cost of the can, type of construction and materials(welds, baffles, SS vs iconel), types/cost/weight of mounts, availability of mounts (now and in the future), warranty ( I think both are lifetime), etc

Good luck with your choice either way and make sure to post a range report.

I have a YHM .308 and like it alot.  I have never shot it next to anything else, so I can't tell you about how it performs.  It is extremely flexible and I really like the QD feature.  I run it on my .308 Saiga, 6.5 & 5.56 ARs, etc.

I will say that it is heavy.  I very much notice the weight, even on my 10.5" SBR.  It is horrible to the point where I hate it, but I notice it every time I mount it.  But let me also say, the flexibility of it almost makes up for the weight.  I plan on moving to a non-NFA state in a year or two, so I didn't want to get a bunch of cans.  This will satisfy my centerfire rifle can until I move.

I have never heard the YHM can. But I looked at getting it due to the much lower cost. Decided against it due to the poor showing it had compared to other cans on "some webpage" that does testing. There are several here that seem to love it. I decided to go with a diff can for my 7.62 and it was not a AAC 7.62SD either. just my opinion

There is a HUGE difference in sound reduction with 300 ultramag.  It will also be noticeable to your shoulder.  Apples to apples?

My Phantom 762 reduces the 300winmag down to hearing safe levels.  All you get is the sonic crack, no boom.  Also helps alot with recoil, makes shooting the mag no problem.  I was kind of developing a flinch after a few close calls between the scope and my eyebrow...  Flinch is gone now thanks to the YHM can, works awesome.

Love the interoperability of being able to use the 762 on all the 556 rifles thanks to the QD mounts working for both.
