I've searched a bit and I can't find a definite answer.

Can I mount a 22LR suppressor on a 5.56 AR barrel (1/2"-28)
and shoot with a 22LR conversion kit without damaging the suppressor?
Of course you can't fire 5.56/.223 because of the higher pressures, what
my question is if I can use the 5.56 barrel or will I have to go with a dedicated 22 barrel.

Thanks

The spec for .223/5.56 threads is to have the threads longer than the same .5x28 pattern you see with .22 rimfire threads.  On the rimfire threads you should have something like .4-.45" long threads while on the .223/5.56 host you should find something like .6-.65" long threads.

Some rimfire suppressors do allow the longer host threads into the back of the suppressor.  However, if your rimfire suppressor does mount on the longer threads you could have an issue of some threads of the host exposed inside the rear of the suppressor.  What can happen is carbon fouling and even some lead buildup could form on those exposed threads making it difficult (or damaging) to remove the suppressor.

The other problem I have with using a "drop-in" conversion kit (like the Ceiner) with a .223/5.56 host is that the barrel is wrong for stabilizing most 38-40 grain .22lr bullets.  The ideal barrel twist for .22lr bullets is 1:16.  If you are shooting these bullets in a 1:7, 1:9 or even a 1:12 twist barrel you could have stability issues.  While this may go somewhat unnoticed when shooting unsuppressed you could end up with end cap and/or baffle strikes with a rimfire suppressor.

There are other reasons I don't recommend using one of these kits and instead recommend a dedicated .22lr upper.  I personally like the Tactical Solutions kits but find the more recent Spikes offering pretty good too.

Hope this makes sense and helps.

I run a TAC65 on a 11.5" RRA and a 10.5" Wilson barrel. I also use a spacer for the extra thread length on the AR. While it is possible to have a baffel strike, I have not. I'm using a stainless CMMG conversion.

this is exactly what I plan on using, I have the cmmg kit, and I'm purchasing the TAC65.
I'm also looking at the SIG 522 as a host, it looks very tempting.

eta* the bbl I would use is 16" m4 profile/feed ramps

Love my sig 522.  Runs great with subsonics, sounds like a stapler.

I had a machinist friend make me a .200 spacer for the Sig 522, the threads on it, and most AR's was .600, and needs to be .400 for most .22 suppressors.  Mine would not thread on all the way and hit the inner o-ring before bottoming out.

I think you won't like the accuracy of .22 ammo out of a 5.56 twist barrel.  The other problem I think is that .22 ammo will foul the bore, and you will have to clean quite well when you switch calibers.

I'm glad I read this! The other day I was screwing around with my AR and put my YHM Wraith on the end of it. It looks pretty neat, and I have a Stainless CMMG .22lr kit coming. The threads match up and everything so I figured it was GTG.
But now I don't think I like the idea of a baffle strike!!! Hmmm..........
