I now own two suppressors (.22LR and .30) and I love them.  I just got the .30 cal suppressor up and running on my 300/221 (300 Whisper) and I've been bitten by the suppressor bug bad.

Now that I have .22LR and full caliber rifle covered (the 7.62 suppressor works on .30 down to .223) I'm thinking about a pistol suppressor.  What I've read in the past seems to indicate that 9mm suppresses much better than .45 due to bore diameter vs suppressor diameter.  The .45 just requires a much larger suppressor to work as well and becomes impractical.  Is this true?

Also, I noticed my .40 S&W is subsonic in standard 180gr loads.  How well does .40 S&W suppress?

If you are looking for a .45 can read up on the AAC TI-RANT and the SilencerCo Osprey.  They have changed everything we used to think about .45 cans.  They are almost a quite as 9mm cans.

It wasn't really a question of size - until fairly recently, there wasn't a .45 pistol can available that would even be considered "hearing-safe" when dry - a far cry from the performance of good 9mm cans. Now there are several .45 suppresors available that bring things down below "hearing safe" and closer into the 9mm's territory.

.40S&W is indeed subsonic with standard 180gr loads; my USPSA Limited gun makes 175~180PF with factory 180gr (that means 970~1000 fps). I have no personal experience with .40 suppressed, and I haven't even really read much on the subject. I would venture a guess that the relative lack of discussion seems to indicate that it probably isn't the best platform...

I'm very encouraged to hear that 45ACP is coming into its own for suppressed use.  I always thought it would be ideal (bigger and slower is the idea) but when I posed that question on  this forum some time ago everyone said that a 45 was a bad idea.  What changed?  Is the baffle technology better?

I can't help you on the .45 but I own 2 9mm cans and I can tell you that they are definitely hearing safe and pretty damn quiet with 147gr rounds.

on my glock G19 if I were to fire it in my living room and you were somewhere else in the house you would think I just dropped a phone  book on a table.

I have gemtec trinity cans, they work goood.

I ordered an Osprey in .45 based on the reviews it's gotten so far.  It seems to be the cats meow for now.  I'm guessing that baffle design is the biggest part of it.
