I was wondering if anybody has experience with one of the older models that has baffles and rolled wire mesh? I am about to pick one up and would like to know a little more about it and the AWC website has no info on it. I am getting it in a "package deal" and have heard it fired (not terribly quiet).
What did that model originally cost? Were they originally blued steel? This thing matches the finish on the Pietro Beretta Mod77 BB that comes with it. Wes |
| I remember reading about the unit in Al Paulsons book, first edition on silencers. The book did not speak about unit prices but I recall it did cover decibel readings. I cannot answer your questions right now but I will try to find the book and look up the decibel metering stats for you and to see if it mentioned anything regarding finishes . You might want to pick up a copy for reference as it was a great read. |
I just picked up the original manual, copyright dated ... 1986/7
This is when AWC was in Friendwood, Tx. It lists the dB reduction @ 30 and used 2 different types of wire mesh in addition to the baffles. Hell, there is even a cross section drawing of the internals. It also list this as having a Blued steel outer, that matches the host weapon perfectly. Wes Sent F4s off today. |

Trip down memory lane. The original Archangel was a take-apart .22LR can that used a combination of technologies prevalent in the early 1980s. It was 1" by around 6.5" and (as I recall) all were 4130 blued steel. It was an outgrowth of an earlier can that my AWC in New Mexico built, the R22-SL.
I doubt that I still have any of the original drawings, but I think I may have the original artwork for the manual. In those days with take-apart cans, the manual centerfold was usually a cross-section drawing to aid the user in re-assembly. The suppressor was certainly decent, but not quite as quiet as some of today's smaller suppressors. |

Thank you for the reply. I do have the original manual and it does show the cross section. It was relatively quiet on the little beretta using subs, but I have heard quieter.
Would replacing or updating the core be a possibility or outright NO-NO? or sacrilege? Wes |

Would replacing or updating the core be a possibility or outright NO-NO? or sacrilege? Wes I don't see why replacing the internals would be a sacrilege. It's a consumer marketed product, not like a WWII issue High Standard HDMS or something. If it comes apart (IE you can turn the caps) and has std .900" ID tubing, I'd fit it with a Checkmate baffle core for $105 shipped. You could replace the screen yourself, but 30DB suppression could be better. |

Updating would involve custom building of internals. |
