I have decided to buy a silencer, but I won't be able to afford one until later on in the year...like September-ish.
Can I apply now and just hold on to the paperwork for X months or does the permission and all expire. Also, do I have to send the $200 from the get go or can that wait? |

The form 4 doesnt give permission other than to transfer something that is already in the NFA registry. Unfortunately in order to transfer something on a form 4 you must include a 200 payment to the gubment to begin the process of the gubment doing the research and saying yes or no. NOW here is the real kicker, you have to have a serial number of the item that you are wanting transfered. So in order to get that serial number you must first purchase the item you are wanting to transfer.
So no the Form 4's dont expire but there are certain things that you will need to fill out on the form 4 to transfer something to you. Serial number of item being transfered and also the name of the dealer and other stuff from the dealer that is transfering the item to you. Basically you will need to pay for the item you want to transfer then pay the 200 bucks along with the form for at that time. You can purchase an item before filing the form 4 and sending it in. I have a friend right now that has the form 4 for a 22 can that he won but doesnt have the money for the stamp so the paperwork just sits in his safe and the can itself sits at the dealers. Luckilly we know the dealer pretty well and shoot with him on a regular basis that the dealer will bring his can out when we shoot so he can shoot it. |

Generally you pay the dealer for the item, then the paperwork gets filled out, then you send that +$200 to the feds, and after approval pick up your item.
As far as delaying the $200, that would really be between you and the dealer. It has not been uncommon for me, however, to order something and pay for it. Wait for it to get fabricated and shipped and then get my paperwork from my dealer and have another month or two go by before I mail it with the check. I think generally once everything is signed, they like to receive them in WV within a year. Depending on what you get, somethings can take awhile to get on the from 3 and make it to your dealer. If you order something that is not in stock, you can probably just squirrel away $20 a week or so and you will have most of it before you form 4 is together anyway. |
