Hey Guys, I posted this in the Reloading section, but thought I might find more info here in the suppressor section...
Ok so I just finished up a 10.5" SBR with a YHM Phantom can, and I want to load up some subsonic .223 to make it super quiet. I also want the weapon to cycle. From what I know so far, using a heavier grain bullet will make the rifle more likely to cycle with such a low muzzle velocity. I also found that using slower burning powders seems the way to go. I have a bunch of 77gr Sierra Match HPBT that I'd like to try. So far I have found the following load data: From Hodgdon: 55 GR. HDY FMJ Clays 3.2grs >>> 1060 FPS 3,700 CUP And on a forum: HDY 75 HPBT S1250(Accurate) 4.5-gr >>> 1052-fps 22,100 PSI I also know you can buy this: Subsonic .223 100gr - cycles the weapon... http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=136315 Thanks! http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/6213/silencers1dj8.jpg |

Farting at thunder.
Bullets light enough to stabilize in your barrel (and not wreck the suppressor) will not cycle the action if loaded to subsonic velocity. Buy a Spikes .22 conversion and shoot CCI0056 loaded in Black Dog magazines; you'll have a long and happy life. |

Ok I should restate my request... ahem
I can easily get a .22 conversion but I don't want to in this case. And yes I know the velocities are in the .22lr range, but with a heavier bullet. I'm not looking for someone to talk me out of it, just looking for some load data. I was also partially trying to find load data where I can make these (or similar): http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=136315 Thanks

One can infer that you can't get rounds that will cycle AND stabilize. More than likely, your barrel twist is not made for such a heavy bullet that, while it may cycle, it probably won't stabilize, thus making you very prone to baffle strikes. I ran into the same problem with my AAC Aviator and Aguila 60gr Subsonic ammo. It will cylce but not stabilize properly and I run the risk of baffle strikes. I don't care to ruin, or run the much higher risk of ruining, my suppressor so I make the best out of it. While you may not want to be "talked out of it" we're just trying to help you understand why there is no such animal. The AMU at Ft. Benning has tried and failed to develop what you are asking for. |

Hmm.. ok. I went ahead and ordered a box of that 100gr stuff from Midway to try it. I do have a 1-7" twist on the barrel, but I understand more now on the risk of baffle strikes. I'll definitely do more research before attempting my own load. Still looking for any load data if someone does happen to have found something. |
