How long should the threaded area be for 1/2*28 for a .22LR suppressor?  It fits on a .22LR AR fine, but I believe that I've read that AR threads are longer than necessary.  I'm getting a .22LR bolt action barrel threaded, and I want to give the proper length.  I have a thread protector that is only .4 long.  Is this the recommended minimum length?  What is the generally accepted 'ideal' length?

Most 22lr cans with use a thread length of .4 like your thread protector measures.  Most AR's are a 1/2x28 with a thread length of .6

A lot of old time machinists used to say the thread length should be equal to the size of the OD for optimum strength. YMMV

This question is raised and addressed on this forum at least once every 3-4 weeks. Most silencer manufacturers specify a maximum length of 0.4 inches of threads for .22LR. Some will accept longer threads, but if you have a suppressor that requires a maximum of 0.4 inches, do not use a longer thread. Doing so will allow the threads to extend into the entrance chamber where they will carbon and you will have real difficulty unscrewing the suppressor. Both Gemtech and AAC have thread specification charts available, and both call for 0.4 inches.
