I'm going to be flying delta air and I am going to be checking in a suppressor along with the rifle.  I can't see anything on the form 4 that says that I need to notify the ATF. Do I or don't I. My final destination is suppressor friendly. Thanks.

no 5320.20 needed for suppressors.

however, the ATF will approve them if you send them in.

No forms needed.

Last time I flew with one the tsa folks didn't even recognize what it was...despite the fact it was sitting right next to a USP 9 SD.

can it be carried on so it isn't actually out of your control?

No, I don't think so because it's a firearm.  Remember the old ARFCOM wisdom: You can't take firearms on a plane!

Is it a firearm, or an NFA item?

My understanding is that all NFA items are legally firearms.  Even suppressors.

I am not a lawyer, nor am I an expert on the NFA.

IIRC, NFA item = Title II Firearm, techincally speaking.

Your Form 4 says "Application for Tax Paid Transfer and Registration of Firearm"

Did you also fill out a Form 4473 when you bought it?

I think that it's a firearm too, FWIW.

Quiet shooting!

Firearm or not, at a minimum, a suppressor is a firearm part. No parts are allowed to be carried on; all parts must be checked.
