After seven long years, I finally found a good host for my AAC Phantom 9mm can. I had orginally bought it for my Glock 34, but did not know at the time that it would not cycle on Glocks. The FAQ on AAC's website did not indicate it at the time. I think I've put less than 25 rounds through that can in the past seven years because it gets old having to rack the slide after each shot. I decided to keep it anyway because I knew that I would eventually get a 9mm SBR.

Well, I finally did it and bought a 5" TROS upper with a Daniel Defense 7" FF rail system. The TROS barrel is 3-lug so I had to get the tip of the barrel threaded to 1/2 x 28 to accept the AAC Phantom can. Keith from NFA Investments did a terrific job on the barrel threading and the turn around time was less than 24 Hours.

Shooting impressions

The recoil was slightly more than the 5.56mm mainly due to the weight of the 9mm bullet compared to a 5.56mm /.223.

Sound

115 / 124 Grain DRY: It's Loud. There's no getting around the supersonic crack, however, shooting it indoors without hearing protection, it did NOT ring my ears.

115 / 124 Grain WET: Still Loud, but not as loud as dry. DUD! I know...

147 Grain Dry: Very comfortable sound. You could shoot this in your backyard and the neighbors would think that it was a pellet gun. The impact downrange is louder than that muzzle report.

147 Grain WET: HOWDY!!! Puts a smile on your face. The impact downrange and the action noise is primarily what you'll hear.

I had no FTF with the 115/124 grain bullets. However, with the 147 grain, I had 1 FTF in every 4-5 rounds. It may be just the brand (Winchester 147 gr. Subsonics - Grey Box), but I will try other brands this coming weekend.

I know that 1928A sells his ultrasound gel and that it's a sticky substance that coats the baffels to remove the FRP so I wonder if cheapo LA Looks hair gel would do the same. Also, I wonder how plain old shaving cream would work. I might try that out this weekend and give a full report on the results.

I will say that though shooting the can wet does make it significantly quiter, it is meesy as hell. All of the internals of the weapon were sprayed with water and had to be cleaned thoroughly to prevent rust. Unless there is a real need for that extra bit of noise suppression, I would probably stick to shooting it dry 99% of the time.

Nice looking piece! I would NOT use hair gel though. It'll get sticky in your upper. Buy the wire pulling gel at Home Depot. It last much longer than water and doesn't have PVP in it (PVP= povidone, the sticky stuff in hairspray and gel).

Yep, nice weapon and stick to wire pulling gel.

Does that make your weapon dirty like water? I looked up the wire pulling gel and there are several kinds. Which one should I use and are they water based (i.e., rust)?

Don't mean to hijack--where did you get the Tros 5" barrel?  Did you buy it recently?  I have been looking everywhere trying to find one, including calling Tros.  Can't find one--supposedly new barrels are in process, but they have been in process for quite a while.  Anyone that could point me to one?  Thanks-

I bought it used here in the EE section.

Took it  to an indoor range today and shot about 250 rounds of UMC 115 gr FMJ though it. Had a FTF / Double Feed rate of 1 in every 12-15. I think that I will tweak it with different mags (currently using the UZI 25 rounders) and see what happens with the new CProducts 32 rounders that I just purchased. If that fails, I will see about getting a new extractor retaining pin as the rolled RRA pins seem to cause issues with some other people with a similar set-up.

On a good note, Keith from NFA Investments did a hell of a job with the barrel threading. I was expecting to have to retighten the suppressor after every magazine, but it stayed on tight throughout the whole 250 session. The man does great work and I will sending him more business in the near future.

Just use different ammo. I bought a case of UMC 9mm and it would not function reliably in three different 9mm AR's or my FA Uzi. The stuff is just too weak for blow back actions. Worked fine in my handguns though.

I switched to WWB and PMC and all weapons function fine now.

Thanks for the tip. I will try that.
