Should I... 1. Order a threaded barrel from someone like KKM or Jarvis 2. Order a factory 17L barrel and have my smith thread it 3. Attach the can with duct tape and gum wrappers |
+1 Love mine! |
+2 I like my Lone Wolf G17 barrel as well. I have never had one single problem with mine. |
From what I can tell this will actually be a little cheaper than a KKM or Jarvis barrel. The downside is I'd still have to shoot jacketed bullets, but that's not as much a factor with 9mm as it would be with 40 or 45. The Lone Wolf barrels seem almost too good to be true. Is there a compelling reason I shouldn't go that route? |

We looked at the Lone Wolf barrels at SHOT and took one over to Mike Smith to check out. Mike and my partner, Allen, discussed it and saw some potential issues with the shoulder, IIRC. Allen then discussed with Lone Wolf. I'll see if I can get Allen to comment, since I wasn't really involved, but I remember the answer was that we weren't gonna recommend those barrels just yet. We do recommend KKM and Jarvis. We've never had a problem with either. Mark |

The threads on the Lone Wolf barrel I examined were not the best, but functional. The issue is they don't fully relieve the threads in front of the shoulder, which can result in misalignment. I tried to send them AAC's threading specs, but the emails bounced back. As to using a G17L barrel in a G17, cutting threads will cut through the Tenifer treatment, exposing the less-hard carbon steel. So now you have threads that can rust. Although the polyagonal rifling is easier to keep clean, I'd rather have a quality stainless barrel instead. I had an interesting discussion with the folks at Shuemann barrels a ways back, they felt cleaning the barrel was a bad idea, as the first few shots in the just-cleaned barrel will re-foul it the same as before cleaning. So just shoot it, no cleaning. Dunno why anybody would shoot bare lead anymore, the health risks aren't worth it. YMMV Allen |

tradecraft.us/Firearms/Glock17Thread/Glock17Thread.htm tradecraft.us/Firearms/Glock34Thread/Glock34Thread.htm I currently have a barrel on order from DarkHelmet, I will report how it works in a few weeks when I get it test it. But given he is a GemTech employee, I am confidant he knows what kind of quality is needed and will not disappoint. www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=118&t=416563 |
...which is not cheap. Reloading with cast lead is MUCH cheaper than jacketed, especially if you're shooting a lot of larger calibers like 40 or 45. I would be more concerned about lead if i shot at an indoor range, but I do all my shooting at outdoor ranges so that's not an issue. I prefer the coated lead bullets when I can find them for a decent price, but I'll take what I can get. The coating just tastes better. |

Great info... and wouldn't it be simple to gently relieve the threads on the bbl? You would prob only be taking a half a thread off and grinding to the root diameter...easily done with a dremmel and cutoff wheel (if you don't have a lathe). I'd like to have a few more Glock bbls, but at the cost of KKM's, I hesitate. |
I used a FAC threaded barrel. I never had a problem with the barrel. Now I would have gone to Jarvis. They are that much better. |
