I've been handloading for a few years now but haven't done any 45 ACP. Now that I've got a Glock 21 and a Gemtech Blackside I'm wondering about the ability to make it more quiet than it is with standard ammo. WKM |
I'm confused. With 230 grain bullets, how do you get super / trans-sonic velocities? ? ? Most of my moderate-full power loads only do about 800 - 850 ft/s. (in a 5" 1911) I do have a light 200 grain cast bullet load at about 450 ft/s that still cycles my 1911. The 185 grain bullets at that velocity make cycling an iffy thing. Dave. |
If that's the case, try a 230 grain bullet (since you are using a glock, I think you are supposed to stay away from cast or lead bullets) with ~3.0-3.2 grains of Bullseye or Red-dot. This load should function, be light recoiling load, and have minimal muzzle blast. Or, pony-up for a suppressor. Dave. |

As I mentioned, I do have a Gemtech Blackside on the gun. Gemtech advises against using water. I have been shooting standard 230 grain FMJ loads and the gun cycles fine with them. I was thinking that a somewhat reduced load with the 230 grain bullet might even be quieter. I suppose the burn rate of the various powders would have some effect also. Thanks for the info. I will try backing off of published standard load data and see how it cycles. I have tried Ballistol in the suppressor and it does quiet it somewhat over shooting it dry, but I will try other substances to compare. WKM |

I have loaded a good bunch of 45ACP with Titegroup. I thought the recoil was nice and didn't give to much of a muzzle-rise. Haven't run them through a suppressor though. But definitely look at Titegroup(load data is on their website). Hint......don't use Trailboss in a suppressor. It is very smoky to begin with and the backblast is significantly worse than say Titegroup. Quiet as all get out but all the smoke has to have ill effects on the suppressor. We didn't shoot it enough to notice anything but something has to be going on inside it. There are some guys on here that have recommended Trailboss for rifle caliber subsonic but I can't find those posts anymore. Titegroup is a great universal powder to load everything from supersonic to subsonic from 9mm to 45ACP and more. Give it a look and you will see how versatile it is. _TS |

I currently reload 221/300 and .308 with Trailboss powder and have seen no signs of it being smoky. I would not recommend it for a .45 ACP in any case. You will need a faster burning powder. In any case, most .45 ACP 230 grain ammo is sub-sonic in short barrels. After you look at the cost of components and your time , if you value that, it doesn't save enough or provide a big enough edge to warrant loading the round. IMHO |
Are you actually trying to say that loading .45acp isn't worth the cost/time, over retail prices of ammo? And are you saying that with a straight face? |
I have. I use 230s over 3.7-3.8 of Clays through my Evo45 and it works great. Cycles and functions reliably in my STI 1911, Hk45 Tac and P220s. |
Yes, I can say that with a straight face. My time is worth more to me than a few cents that I will save. My free time is valuable to me, so I will pay a few extra cents and pick up Win WB at Wal-Mart and spend my time shooting. |
Alright I shot these loads this weekend through a USP Tactical w/ Blackside. 4.4 gr of Bullseye is not enough to make the gun cycle with the Blackside. It cycled OK without the suppressor but not quite enough with it attached. Each round would get a casing stuck horizontally between the top of the slide and barrel. It measured at an average of 745fps while store bought Blazer Brass measured an average of 841 with no cycling issues. |
Ok thanks I'll try that. This was the first I've loaded 45 acp so I started low just to baseline it. Next I'm going to do 4.6 and 4.8 loads since I still have a bunch of Bullseye powder. I'd like to get it in the 850-900 fps range like the store bought Blazer ammo which works very well with my Blackside. |
