I own several 22lr and 9mm cans. I have never heard a 308 can before. How much does the can help out on a 308, i heard to get them quiet you have to shoot expensive subsonic ammo through them. I be looking at them soon as my Class III dealer in town is not renewing his license.. Thanks for the help. -- Blake

I shoot a 762-SD on a 20" PSS with military ball ammo without hearing protection.  Plenty quiet to me.

Shooting supersonic ammo you'll still hear the sonic crack, which sounds similar to the report of an unsupressed 22 rifle.  Not nearly as quiet as a suppressed 22 or 9 shooting subsonics, but still plenty quiet.  I think a 308 bolt gun with a good can is quieter than a 223 gas gun with a good can.

my omega 30 with a 21" bbl is quiet enough to shoot without hearing protection when shooting federal gmm 175's .sounds a little quieter than a 22lr ...as far as subsonics go....

if you want reloading data send me a im when you get ready and i will give it to you.

I've got both an SWR Omega30 and the AAC Cyclone. They are both quiet enough to shoot without hearing protection.
When it comes to any of the top tier .308 can's, they all sound roughly the same. Even the Jet cans, whose numbers don't compare to the other top cans sound roughly the same. At the Silencertests shoot this year, we lined up 3 custom .308's-all with 22" barrels. 1 was mounted with a Cyclone, the other with a Jet and the other with an older SWR can. Firing FGMM ammo from the same lot, they all sounded roughly the same. The Jet's sound "signiture" was a little different but the overall sound level was the same. Observations were made standing at the same position and an equal distance from each rifle.
With full power ammo, the supersonic "crack" is pretty loud-roughly the same as a .22LR, but the sound seems like it's projected downrange so it's really not bad. Subsonics are about as loud as an air rifle

Factory subsonic ammo isn't cheap, but you can reload your own with proper care.

Subsonic .308 is retarded.  Use a .22LR instead.

My .308 with the TPRS is quieter than my AR with the M496D.

I have a .308 sub sonic load for a Hornady 170 grain FP that is very accurate and easy to load without fillers. It is loaded with Trail Boss powder and with my 7.62SD can, it is like an air gun! It is a valuable load to have if you own a 30 cal can. When you need data, just IM me.

180gr at 1000 FPS vs. 40gr at 1000fps..... dee di dee

I've got an AAC Cyclone on a 20" Remington 700. At least as quiet to my ear as an M42000 or YHM Phantom. I like it.

I had a Jet .308 titanium suppressor, I sold it and upgraded to a Shark .308 titanium suppressor, which is lighter, quieter, and cheaper than the Jet.

I've got an SWR omega 30 and with full power its less than a 22lr you do hear a sonic crack its not that loud and its going away from you. My friend has a sound tech 30 cal can it sounds the same as mine, he shoot with a guy that has gemtech can and the owner of the gemtech said "he's doesn't sound that good".
The area of 30 cans tends to bring out a two different kinds of people ones that want light weight and cut some of the sound and folks that want sound suppression at the cost of bing heavy.
Lots of long range shooters like the light cans cause they may be running with them and shooting different position's were weight is an issue. Also when your shooting next to a guy with a compted 300win mag even a few db reduction sounds good.
You have to think about what your going to use it for and on what kind a gun.
Subsonic is cool cause it so quite to show your friends but not if your shooting at long ranges.

With all the time and effort you put into it to get a load right, you can just buy a .22 rifle, use standard velocity rounds a cheap can, and have a more effective piece of lead flying down-range.

Did we mention the high probability of baffle strikes with those big heavy .308 rounds going so dang slow through a 7-8" can?

It's not much effort to come up with a subsonic load, and subsonic 22LR is in now way more effective. 30 cal subsonic has more energy, travels further and hits harder

It's not a high probability at all. It's a simple test before screwing on the can to ensure the bullet is stabilized.

it didnt take alot of time to work up a load...mabye a hour

i have shot over a thousand and no baffle strikes yet....and every one of them have been stable and they also shoot well....around 2 moa

just out of curiosity, what experience do you have with subsonic 308s?
