I am in the process of reassembling one of my Garands after doing some work on it (wood refinish, etc.).  Despite my best efforts, I cannot seem to compress the trigger spring and plunger by hand to go into position between the trigger and hammer.  I must be getting old and decrepit.

Any tricks someone might suggest, or should I just give up and take it to "Guido the Gunsmith"?  Thanks.

Fiddle with it some more.  I've seen old-timers dis- and re-assemble these things by hand, in seconds, and while looking elsewhere and conversing.  You, too, can do it.  Maybe some slightly smaller diameter slave pins might help, as well as gently but firmly anchoring the trigger group housing, maybe in a vise or somesuch.  Good luck, you can do it!

It's a bear to get back together, I can't remember exactly how I did it. I used punched to hold everything together, pushed the hammer in place then put the pin in I believe.

It does take a couple of times putting them together by hand to get the technic down. What I do is hold the trigger housing assy in my right hand and with my right thumb press down on the sear on the trigger assembly compressing the hammer spring until I can get the pin in .
