Ammo is going to be outrageous. I don't see the point of a .17 cal

Ammo susposed to be priced same as .22 mags. I think a hot little .17 ballistic tip has a lot of potential for varmits and squirrel.

Hornady expects it to retail for 10-12/00 a box. I checked with them and they said expect Cabela's to have it as early as anybody on the national level.

Fast and flat baby. I can squeeze 4300+ fps out of my 17 rem right and still hold 3/4 inch at 100 yards. I need to test other loads in my rifle but for now it still shoots minute of 'hog. I'd like to get it to 1/2 inch. Excellent varmint round that poses less of a ricochet risk then larger rounds and can be used on larger varmints such as 'yotes. I have heard anecdotes about people using the 17Rem for deer in States that have no caliber restrictions. I'm not too keen on the rimfire version and doubt I'll purchase one but there is a niche for sub calibers, mostly for varminting. |

I figure it'll fade into the past just like the 5mm rimfire that Rem was promoting in the 70's Rem. at the time said it was a wizbang, high velocity,flat trajectory yada,yada,yada, but never did catch on,ammo prices kept increasing and interest decresed.....it finally went away,so will the .17 rimfire....

The only drawback I see is rimfire = no reloading. |

There are 'Smiths that will build them but I don't know anyone that does it on a regular basis. Fred Moreo of SharpShooter Supply has built some, he has one himself for 'yotes. |

I just read the artical in American Rifleman
I like the Idea alot Im interested in it. It has potential I like .22 its probably my fav round because I can go out back and blast away without spening a whole lot of cash have a good time and still have a sholder at the end of the day. I cant take 500 sjhots a day with my 30-06 180gn nosler ballistic tips but I can with 22 of coarse Id like it better in an auto for fast follow up shots on multiple rabbits I love my 10/22 but anyone know how good .17 will be on yotes'??? id like to know |

I think it's a neat little cartridge, but will be surprised if it does not flop. Nobody, except Ralph above, seems to be comparing it to the 30-plus year old 5mm Remington. Probably don't want to put a hex on it, but the effort required to ignore the similarities seems almost comical.
The new cartridge sounds great for rifles, but the straight-walled case of the .22 Magnum Rimfire probably makes it more suitable for use in revolvers. And in revolvers, you typically have the option of switching to a .22 Long Rifle cylinder to do most of your shooting with that far cheaper round. These advantages, together with the cheaper type bullets used in loading .22 Mag. ammo mean it will be an uphill battle for the .17 Hornady. Especially since, once you pass the price level of the .22 Mag., you could reload .22 Hornet, K-Hornet, Bee, or even beyond for the same money. |

I think not the round was developed with the V-max bullet for flat shooting. the round was made for varment hunters (the name varment express) not some danm armor defeteing cop killer super bullet and upon impact if vilently breaks up ints not AP Its made for varment hunting and I belive it has less over all penetration that 22 mag. If thats a AP bullet to you you are smokeing someting and the ammo already is solt to civilians go to hornidays web site Ive heard from other sites on the net that there maby barrels already avalible for it or will come out soon and ruger and marlin have complete guns coming out next year bilt for the round and were designed for TARGET/VARMENT shooting |

Let say that disaster strikes and the ammo goes out of production. Wouldn't it be possible to just convert the rifle to .22 WMRF since it uses the same action?

Midway has the ammo for 10.00 for 50.
Hornady site says Marlin & Ruger have rifles for sale. .19 Calhoon .19/22 Hornet .19/223 These 2 look quite interesting. Velocities up to 4100 fps on 223 version according to web site. Supposed to be better ballistically than.224 bullets. Ammo about 25.00/50 but can form cases by just running hornet or 223 brass through sizing die. Jamescalhoon.com Chatted with him when getting info to order bullets. Said somebody working on setting up AR in .19/223. |

A solution to a problem that doesn't exist.
It's not a cheap round, not that much better than the 22 mag, lot's less than the .223 and non-reloadable. Pretty soon, it'll be like the 5mm. |
