DnPRK,
He said $800 or less, not $1500 or more!!!

You should look into the FAL/STG type rifles.  Do a search on them to find out more.  They are great rifles.

You might also save a bit more. Wholesale on a Eagle Arms AR 10A4 is $875.00

You can still find deals on M1A's. I just did a transfer on a preban (1983)M1A Standard grade in 90% cond for $750 to a bud of mine...

Any of the CAI or "other" built clones are a crap shoot. Take 10 rifles...
3 or 4 will be "TITS"
3 or 4 will be "OK, it's not that bad"
The rest will be "problem child POS"...

The only correct answer here is FAL.  Look around and you can probably find a good shooter in that price range.  I would be inclined to go with a Garand in .308, but I don't think you'll find one that cheap.

Lower
Lower with match trigger
Lower- stripped

Wholesale on a Armalite A4 upper is $578.00
Stainless is $631.00

Well..the $800 or less certainly puts a cramp on things...other wise I would advise you to go with a new M1A.

In your case the best route would be to get a hold of a CMP M1 Garand then send it in to a good gunsmith to have it rebuilt into a national match .308 M1 Garand. Gunsmiths such as Accuracy Speaks can build you a very accurate M1 Garand for a fraction of the cost of what Fulton Armory charges. There are also a lot other very good M1 Garand specialists out there as well.

There are lots of cheap 308 bullet launchers out there...$800 will not get you max 2 MOA unless you luck into that 1 in 1000 rifle/load combination. I gave up on that quest a long time ago. Best to save your pennies for an AR-10T or M-1A. Next best bet is to find a used Browning BAR with BOSS like BigDozer66 said. It can be "tuned" to the load, but still no guarantee for 2 MOA. Only other alternative is a bolt gun - Savage 10FP.

$800 308.

dude you are talking bolt actions.
a rem model 7 will give you what you want for about $350.
or save up 400 more and get a AR-10

i would warn you away from cheap autos

you can get a surplus M1 for 750.

Imbel receiver  $199. @ Aims.
Grade 1 Stg-58 parts kit $300. @ JT
US parts $100.  @ DSA arms

You can build up the rifle in less than 20 min.   What you will end up with is a rifle that will shoot 1 1/2" @ 100yds with surplus ammo(Port/Radway/SA).   When you order the parts kit, Make sure that the barrel is clean and fresh.  If it's not, call JT and have them send you a new kit, or barrel.

Spend some time @ www.fnfal.com  Or, you can e-mail me and I can walk you threw the build.

So far I have built up 24 rifles(mine and friends)  all have shot under 2" moa.  A "like new"  barrel is the key. If you want to shoot under 1" moa, you can hand load and turn off the gas sytem to acheive the goal.  So far my best is .70 with hand loads, gas system on but just enough to cycle the action.  This rifle was built on a DSA receiver using a Global parts kit(like new), DSA US parts including one of there muzzle brakes, with the trigger worked to 3lb with zero creep. The rifle is loud, but I can shoot it all day long due to the lack of recoil.

P.S. Goatboy, the site is loading really slow.
