Stopped in at one of the gun shops I prefer and on the used rifle rack they had a winchester model 100 in 308. The receiver reminded me of a oversize marlin 22 with the cocking handle sticking out on the right hand side of the bolt. What I'm wanting to know is what type of operation does it use. No noticable gas tube or gas trap. Also the price was $400.00 is this a fair price? Thanks this is my first post but I have been reading the fourms a long time and would not be surpised if some here owns one. |
| I have a friend that has one. I haven't played with it much, for all I know it may be recoil operated. It does make a nice handy brush hunting gun for deer or hogs though. I don't know what the going price is on them but I do know that you don't see them very often. |
| Yes, it's a gas gun. $400 is about the going price on most post-64 Model 100s, some higher for the pre-64s, and a lot higher on the pre-64 in the .284 chambering. They're a fairly heavy rifle, but seem to be fairly reliable. I have my Grandad's pre-64 Model 100 in .308 and it's seen some hard use and keeps right on kicking. |
| It's gas operated, have one in a .243, shoots better than average. $400 is a fair price around here, not a bargain, but fair if original and not beat up. Pre-64 would be worth a little more. It has the fine checkering instead of the huge basketweave pattern. Magazines will hurt you for a spare though, $50 each. |
Here's mine: The gas system is contained in the forearm. New magazines are/were being made by Twin Pines Armory on old Winchester machinery. Except for their not having the Winchester trademark, they're identical to the originals. Available in Gun List for about $35. Don't lose or abuse it, that's for sure. |
Ain't happening. As long as you don't lose it, you'll be okay. I have two and they're now forty-years-old and still going good.
I'd have sold the 100 before the 88. The 88 just seems to be a better shooting gun. Start hitting the big shows and subscribe to Gun List. They're out there for the right money. |

JD I got the .243 from my dad, the .308 was just something I picked up in a trade. The Souix Falls gun show in January is probably the biggest one I get to, might have to look hard for one this year. The guys around here just keep carrying the same guns from year to year adding more $ to their price tag and not selling them. Also with my AR habit lately, can't seem too keep enough funds together when a decent one comes around. Byron |
