yesterday while browsing a pawnshop i saw an ar-15 marked "Colt SP1", sn sp388##.
it had a birdcage flash suppressor, bayonet lug, triangular handguards, no forward assist.
it appeared to be in decent condition.
what is this piece? is it preban? what's it worth?

SP1's are prebans.  I've been tinkering with one for many years.  Nothing left of the original except the preban receiver.  They are  good rifles as is, but can always be "improved".

I would buy it for $1200, maybe $1300 depending on condition. I love those triangular handguards.
