I have decided that my wife needs a good rifle she can handle since her arms get tired pretty quick after shooting my 16" guns off hand.
I want it to be a semi-auto, mag fed, in a caliber suitable for taking hogs and other small-medium game. My initial thoughts: Tavor, krink SBR in 5.45, or 300 blk SBR, or 7.62x39 SBR Your thoughts? |

Of the rest of your list, (Tavor, 300BLK SBR, x39 SBR) the AR SBR is easily the most versatile. 300BLK is "the best way to shoot 7.62x39 out of an AR" in Supersonic and gives you the option of being super sneaky snake with big fat subs and a can, if you want. Lots of new bullet constructions coming out, and 300BLK is a cheap game to get into (compared to other calibers.) It's very effective out of a short barrel, and it's pretty simple. Also a ton more opportunity for accessory and optics mounting and customization for fit, trigger, etc. 6.8 is decent too, but IMHO, it's the same PRICE as 300blk for ammunition, more expensive for other components (bolt, mags, for example) and frankly, I don't think the extra complexity is worth the slight edge in potential legality, the delta of which is going to be even smaller with a short barrel. If it were me in your shoes, I'd build a 9 or so inch 300BLK. I'd go with the LWRC UICW stock, a nice trigger and whichever grip she likes the best. Let her pick out the rail (can't go wrong with Giesselle though) and maybe check out the new Supersonic REAPR ammo which looks pretty good for your potential application. Shouldn't cost more than a grand even with a very nice barrel and rail, and maybe giving her some agency on the build will encourage her a little more since it'll be even more "hers". (Side note: That is literally precisely what I did when GF mentioned she'd like to hunt from horseback. A light, short, suppressed 300BLK carbine turned out to be literally perfect for that application, though she didn't get to go this year. See how it works next year.) |

The tavor is a bulky, clunky gun with different ergonomics. Had her road test one, it's short, but the weight is still there. . My spouse has the same issues when it comes to holding an AR or other long gun. Due to shoulder issues, she ain't no spring chicken. So.. i built her a 12" SBR Ar, using a Cav-Arms, later stag, 1pc polymer lower. lightweight bbl, carbonarms (carbon fiber hand guard) Basic A1 f/hider wearing a MTAC 1-4. It's short, light , easily maneuverable in tight spaces. Regarding a 5.45, forget it. The ammo supply while ok now has had a somewhat sporadic issue when it comes to continual supply of it. The heavier calibers are OK, if one chooses a 300 BLK. Same mags, Ar platform, just a different bbl. |
