I have the opportunity to purchase a Springfield Armory SAR-8.  This is actually a 3 overstamped with an 8.  The packaging calls it a SAR 8 Sporter and it includes a rifle, scope (cheap) 5 mags, 750 rds of ammo, bipod and by the way the rifle has never been fired 19yrs old.
I can purchase this for $1,500.00 for the complete package outlined above.  I understand that the 8's are junk but my question is; being an overstamped 3 and the rounds, scope, bipod, original box and 5 mags, is this a deal worth pursuing.  When I do buy the rifle can I return it to Springfield Armory for a M1?  Is the M1 a much better rifle than an 3 overstamped to 8?  Thank You for your replies.
Bill

I have 3 pictures I just don't know how to upload them to this site.

The 3 overstamp 8 is a good gun.  It is a bent sheet metal Greek made HK91.  The crappy SAR 8's are the aluminum receivers.  Buy them for an exchange for an M1A.

$1500 is a bit much but they don't make them anymore.  I would try for around $1200 myself.

Does it have the Greek receiver or the Springfield Alumibomb receiver?

If this is the over stamp model that has pre-ban features then I think it's a good buy.   What I mean is if it looks exactly like an HK91, not the SAR that has a thumb hole stock and pinned muzzle brake.
FYI it's not an alumibomb if it's an over stamp.   Those are flat out SAR-8's.

From what I have read being an over stamped 3 to 8 is Greek?

Yes. It is a licensed Greek made copy of the HK91

Springfield warranties its products for life. The aluminum receivered SAR8 is a turd and is no longer produced. They will give you an M1A as a replacement.

I paid $975 for my greek sar8 and I actually got a pretty decent deal for the rifle. The 3/8 overstamp in question is a more desirable rifle then mine so $1500 for the package isn't a bad price actually(depending on furniture and type of ammo). If you could get the price down anymore I'd definitely do it if you want an hk91 type rifle.

The Greek SAR series is a Licensed copy of the H&K. Not that funky Al receiver turd. For the OP's price he was told, factor in the 750 rds of .308. Yeah, that's a good price for supposedly NIB / Unfired.

means nothing. What does the receiver look like??  If you have the coin and it's stamped, buy it. Come sept / oct of next year. if the vagina has the D side wrapped up, you'll double your investment.  If not you'll still have a good deal.

They will then give you credit towards a new M1A - big difference.

Almost better to pick up a cheap SAR 8 and get a M1 in return not just a credit.
