I received an Eotech 516 for Christmas.  The 516 takes 2x CR123a batteries.  This one came with the batteries already installed, and was allegedly not a floor model.  Regardless, I strapped it on top and went to zero her yesterday.  It had worked 100% all the time I had been playing with it prior to going to the range, but when I got out to the range, it would not turn on.

Mind you, my rifle was in a case, in the bed of my buddy's truck and it was about 30 degrees out that day, snow on the ground, etc...When it would not turn on the first time, I threw the rifle in the truck and after about 10 minutes, took it back out and was able top turn it on.  I take the rifle and walk down toward the target, raise up, and the reticle is getting dim, then shuts off.

I get back home, and prior to putting the rifle away, I am again able to turn it on.  To see if it dies out again, I leave the Eotech on and go to dinner.  After 2 hours, I get home and it is still on (as it should be).

I have read that the CR123's are supposed to be great for cold weather, but have read a few reviews that stated these specific 123's (Panasonics) have issues in cold weather (one guy even specified at 30F or below oddly enough).

Just curious if anyone else has experienced this or have any insight into this?

What was most painful was being out with my buddy who has Aimpoints on all of his rifles and him wanting to do a direct comparison between the two sights.  Suffice to say, he was extremely confident in the money he spent and L3 Communications did not acquire another customer.

I have 2 516's and have not had any problems with them at all.  Now, it also does not get that cold very often down here in Texas, and I also only use Surefire CR123's, so that may have something to do with it also.  I do know that if you figure out it isn't the batteries, Eotech's warranty program is top notch.

Well, that's good to know. Fortunately, it is still under the 30 days from the original purchase date of the vendor.  I was thinking of going to exchange it, just in case...also going to run Surefire's.

I just set the rifle outside on my back patio, it is approximately 27F right now.  I'll check it in an hour.  The optic is working just fine right now...will update in a few.

Surely if EOTechs work in Afghanistan during the winter they'll work at your house when it's in the 20s.

I'd like to think, but it didn't.  I definitely am not saying it's the Eotech. I'm fairly confident it's the batteries, but not chancing it when I don't have to.  When I left it out the other night, I attempted to fire it up and it did not.  After 5 minutes in my 70F house, it turned on.  I brought it back outside and after about 3 minutes, she faded out completely.

Then again, we're dealing with electronics.  Anything is possible, could be the unit.

The vendor I bought from could not get anymore 516's so they allowed me to upgrade.  I was very close to telling them to forget it and that I would just try new batteries, but then they offered me a great deal.  For another 35.00 they are having an XPS3-0 out to me.  I think I scored.

Sometimes you have to turn the brightness up.

When you turn it on, regardless if you use the up or down arrow, it immediately goes to the 12th level of brightness (which is bright enough for absolute daylight).  Regardless, I tried to crank it up, but it's hard to do when it doesn't turn on.

Hmmmm....

I've used a 516 for years and have used in near single digit temps multiple times with no issues.

What batteries do you use?  These were Panasonics.

Surefire, Streamlight, Panasonic...there are only 2 or 3 manufacturers that make all the CR123As. I think Kevin at brightflashlights told me Panasonic makes Surefire, Streamlight and Battery Station batteries.

It sounds to me like the batteries were almost dead when you got it.

I am sure you're right...unfortunately, it doesn't stop the ration of shit flooding my way from my buddy the Aimpoint cheerleader.

Meh, it's hard to argue with the price you paid for the XPS.
