Hey guys I have a Savage 110 .243 I want to do some work on. I plan on this rifle being a new deer/hog rifle and a general farm rifle so I don't have to beat up my nice remington .243.
I want this to be a 200 yd rifle. I plan on cutting it back to 16"-18" and using an aimpoint 9000L or 1-4x scope. My question is, what velocity will I be getting out of a barrel at either of these lengths? Will an 16-18" .243 be an effective 200yd gun or will I lose too much? |

100gr, no particular manufacturer. I don't reload. I have used 100gr remington core-lokt since I was a kid for hunting Quoted:

What ammo do you plan to use and bullet weight, this will determine velocity, etc 100gr, no particular manufacturer. I don't reload. I have used 100gr remington core-lokt since I was a kid for hunting It'll work fine. If anything, the slightly lower velocity will produce a less violent upset of the bullet nose, a slightly smaller wound channel and subsequently deeper penetration, even though total energy on target will be somewhat lower. Won't matter though as long as you hit 'em right. |

No experience at 200 but my 15" 6mmRem Encore handgun works just fine on deer at 100. Using a 95gr Nosler. I would certainly take the shot at 200 as long as I had a solid shooting position so obviously I think your proposed rifle would be fine. Your 1-4X certainly will work however depending on your conditions I might be tempted to go with a 2-7X. Can't remember what velocity I'm getting, I'll try to remember and look when I get home tonight. |

so what you are sayin is that you have a .243 BBQ gun? that you show off? hunt the Remington... it deserves it. Nope, it hunts plenty. My dad bought it in college and has killed many many deer with it. I have killed many deer with it. so have many other family members. It has become a family hunting rifle and will be an heirloom. When I go pig hunting at night or through thick stuff, there is no reason to beat the shit out of this rifle when it gets tossed in the bed of a truck or covered in silt and mud while stalking. |
