I've have been around hunting style guns all of my life but only the last couple of years have I got in to platforms that's not really what I would consider hunting rifles. With that said I never stayed up on the gun laws other than how many rounds my 11-87 could hold while duck hunting or something of that nature. One thing I've noticed while poking around on EE is the price a Pre-Band lower will bring compared to a post band receiver.

What are the main reasons these lowers bring so much more? Is it for ownership in states with much stricter gun laws or what really is the driver of these higher prices? Sorry to sound so uneducated but semi auto rifles never interested me until around 2011.

Pretty simple really. It's folks taking advantage of others whose states kept the assault weapons ban. In 1994 the AWB went into affect.Altho it federally "sundowned" some states kept it such as NY. However, there was a grandfather clause. Anything made prior to the 1994 ban was OK,,just no new stuff. Sellers started charging a premium for "pre ban" made receivers as they could buy new ones with no restrictions and folks in ban states could own them.
Sooo,,, bottom line,it's price gouging . And the sad part is that folks in ban states paid. Now here in NY NOTHING is grandfathered,so pre ban or post ban does not make a difference.

You got it.  Call it free enterprise,  supply vs demand, or simple economics.  There is a reason one only hears the term southern hospitality in the south and not the east,  west or north.  Bet it's been a while since you heard it too,  even in NC.  America has made some pretty bad turns for the worse in the last 2-3 degades concerning most anything that has to do with honesty and integrity from the top to the bottom.

Not much different paying extra for a pre ban lower in a ban state than a retro specific lower compared to a non retro specific lower or paying a little more for a good looking hooker than an ugly hooker.  Date expired green beef at the grocery compared to fresh red beef at the grocery.  The farther humans move away from agrarian and religious society the worse it will become also.  It's basically the big city lifestyle visiting the country lifestyle.  Turn before you burn!  Only in America could an entity exist $20 trillion in the red and smugly look one in the eye while they steal the shirt off one's back.  Even notice the thief whines the most when someone steals from them.

You forget that many people selling those preban recievers paid premium prices during the national ban.

Nobody is taking advantage of anybody. It's called supply and demand. And for the record, I have only been a buyer, not a seller.

I am surprised the prices are still high since only 2 states matter anymore. CT for only certain branded lowers and MA.
