Looking to spend about a grand on a .308.  Give me pros and cons for each.  Quality?  Reliability?  Accuracy?

Not a fan of DPMS and the PTR91 or G3 clones are a PITA to clean. If you want something in .308 that's handy, reliable, and accurate then buy a Ruger GSR. Just my .02

I've been looking at a PTR/G3 myself and have heard how dirty they can get.  I own several DI AR-15's and have let one go about 400-500 rounds between cleanings.  How would a PTR/G3 compare to this?  Thanks.

It's not about how quick they get dirty. You can foul up any firearm rather quickly using the dirtiest propellants. The G3 platform isn't as nice to field strip as say the AR platform

Look through the recent dpms oracle threads that has been posted here in the last month.

FAL/L1a1 type rifle if all you have is a grand.   If you can spend more then get a SIG716...

If you could save up another $500 or so, then your .308 options would be much better. FAL, M1A, Sig 716 etc.

if i was in the market i would look for a vepr in .308. centerfire systems had som stragglers in the $400-500 range.

maybe a saiga conversion. can't get much simpler than ak fieldstripping

i have dsa stg58, but i hear pretty bad reviews about the newer dsa stuff.

You should be able tom get an FAL clone built by a good smith for $1000.  Mags and parts are still reasonable and a lot of people know how to work on them.

Recoil on the PTR is fairly robust, so it kind if powers thru the filth. It gets dirty, but I've never had any issues with any of mine into the 6-700 round mark.

Course in this day in age that's like another grand in ammo.

The PTR is simply a few notches above anything from DPMS, and I have had both (traded the PTR for an M1A and never looked back ). Recoil on the PTR was very mild, and the accuracy was acceptable at roughly 2" at 100m with older early 80's LC M80 ball. The DPMS was just a piece of junk. Picky eater, super tight magwell (PMAG's didn't fit), improperly staked gas key, loose gas block from the factory, etc etc.

Good to know.  I ended up ordering a DSA Standard FAL this week.
